After Microsoft came out promising to seriously improve the performance of Windows 11, behind the scenes a secret project was moved forward under the name "K2" to solve the core problem of the system that had been constantly criticized, both the latency and instability of the UI in recent times.

The company is starting to send a clear signal to focus more on performance - Windows Update, add features that users have long demanded, and make way to remove unnecessary features like Copilot.

A report from Windows Central indicates that K2 will use WinUI 3 as the core of its development, Microsoft's new design framework for Windows apps, with the development of a new System Compositor to reduce latency and memory usage, helping important UI like Start Menu and Taskbar respond better even in situations where the system is hard at work.

One of the highlights is Start Menu, which is being completely rebuilt on WinUI 3, which Microsoft confirms is moving towards 100% native apps. The new version may be up to 60% faster with customization options such as shortening-expansion and hiding parts of the menu.

The K2 plan also mirrored Microsoft's change of direction from an emphasis on adding new features, specifically AI, to improving the basics of the system to be faster, stable, and more fluid in use, as well as setting stricter quality standards before releasing new features to reduce bug problems that had previously occurred.

There are also game optimization goals to counter SteamOS, as well as cleaner UI adjustments such as reducing interference from Widgets and potentially removing ads from Start Menu, with the K2 plan's results expected to begin to be evident by late 2026 to 2027.
