Microsoft announced upgrading Windows 11 driver quality through the Driver Quality Initiative, or DQI. At the latter WinHEC 2026 event, drivers were found to be one of the key factors directly affecting the PC experience - stability, safety, efficiency, power consumption and machine heating.
According to Microsoft, a driver is the part that connects Windows to hardware, chips, internal devices, and peripherals. If the driver is good quality, the user will get a fluid, stable, and secure machine. If the driver has a problem, the user usually sees it as a problem, even if the real cause may come from the driver.
In the past, some drivers may not cause a power screen or crash directly, but result in a retardant, small jerk, quick battery depletion, hot machine, or cause devices like audio, visual, camera, connectivity, and accessories to malfunction. Microsoft therefore wanted to adjust the driver evaluation criteria to be more comprehensive than before.
The DQI guidelines will focus on driving some drivers to move from Kernel Mode to User Mode to reduce their risk to the system, including enhancing the reliability of their partners and drivers by tightening their Partner Monitoring, adding automated analytics, and adjusting the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) specification or driver certification standard known to users as WHQL to be more stringent than ever in stability, performance, power consumption, and actual quality of operation on Windows 11.
Microsoft will also adapt driver management on Windows Update more systematically, reducing or phasing out obsolete and low-quality drivers, expanding the way to measure driver quality from the original crash focus, to other factors such as stability, functionality, performance, energy consumption, and thermal effects to make it more reflective of the user's practical experience.
Microsoft is also preparing an automatic driver recovery system. If drivers released through Windows Update have problems, they will be able to reverse to a more stable version to reduce the impact on users. This project will be implemented with hardware partners such as AMD and Intel to make Windows 11 more stable, fluid and reliable in the future.
