Browser developers included a letter to Microsoft to "Enough."
A group of several web browser developers issued an open letter to Microsoft, frankly wording "Enough is enough" or "Enough is enough," calling on the company to stop using the advantage of the Windows operating system in pushing Microsoft Edge and giving users the opportunity to choose to use their preferred browser more fairly.

The letter was published by the Browser Choice Alliance (BCA), a coalition made up of several browser developers including Google Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Wavebox and Midori, by sending it directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, stating that users should have the right to choose a web browser themselves without being guided or forced through the operating system's mechanisms.

According to BCA, Microsoft continues to use a multi-modal approach to encourage users to turn to Edge, whether it's displaying Edge recommendation messages when a user tries to download a rival browser, settings that make changing the default browser more complicated than it should be, including that some types of links in Windows are still forced to open through Edge even if the user has already set another browser to the default.

The Coalition also sees such behavior as affecting competition in the web browser market, as many users may not decide on a product based solely on quality or features, but rather influenced by design and constraints within the operating system, which puts other developers at a competitive disadvantage.

In an open letter, the BCA offered several demands including: making it easier for users to change their default browser; respecting user preferences in all parts of Windows; terminating the use of messages or notification windows with user-guided characteristics to induce the return of Edge, as well as providing PC manufacturers with the opportunity to present alternative browsers equally.

In addition, the group urged Microsoft to remove some of the restrictions on Windows S Mode that were seen as impeding browser usage from other developers, and to stop using system updates as a way to promote Edge.

Despite Microsoft having yet to comment on the letter, this point reflects that competition in the web browser market continues to be a topic of attention; specifically, at a time when web browsers have become the primary gateway for access to various online services and AI tools more than ever before.
