AMD has continued to eat up the CPU market share in the gamer sector. After the May 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, AMD's proportion of CPU users on Windows PCs has risen to 44.97%, while Intel is 55.02%, leaving the gap between the two camps at only about 10%, which is one of the closest levels in the history of the Steam Hardware Survey.

Back in the lead-up to Ryzen's 2017 launch, the situation was vastly different from today, with Intel owning virtually unparalleled PC and PC gaming CPUs, while AMD's share was below 20-25% in many markets, and it played almost no role in the assemblage segment for high-end gamers.

The arrival of the Zen architecture and Ryzen CPUs in 2017 became a major turning point for AMD by leveraging both performance and value, leading the company to gradually take back its share from Intel over the years.

Data from the Steam Hardware Survey shows that AMD had only about 23% of its share about five years ago, before moving up to 30% in 2021 and reaching 40% in 2025, until recently approaching 45%.

A key factor driving AMD to continue to grow is the popularity of the Ryzen family of CPUs, particularly the X3D models that come with 3D V-Cache technology, which is widely regarded in the gamer segment as one of the best gaming CPUs on the market, resulting in AMD becoming the top choice for those who assemble new PCs or upgrade their original machines.

Despite Intel still leading with a share of over 55%, the latest figures clearly reflect that the PC gaming market is no longer unilaterally occupied by the Sky camp; and if trends over the years move forward, AMD is likely to approach or potentially hit 50% on the Steam Hardware Survey in the near future.
