Cambodian government announces ban on Discord and Patreon
The Cambodian government ordered a block of access to the Discord and Patreon platforms, along with dozens of other websites, behind the Cambodian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, or TRC, stating that these sites are linked to illegal online gambling, investment scams, and other illegal activities online.

According to the report, this blog directive covers at least 31 domains with both websites directly related to the gambling web, including large platforms like Discord and Patreon, which are identified as potentially being used as a means of contacting, coordinating, or encouraging illegal activity. This does not mean that these platforms are direct gambling web.

According to a spokesman for Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, these sites have been open for some time and the latter has received complaints from users who lost money from illegal online activities.

The move is part of the online gambling and cybercrime sweep in Cambodia, an issue that has been constantly watched over the years, with the Cambodian government previously stating that it has blocked over 18,000 online gambling-related illegal websites, scams, fraud and cybercrime since 2021.

However, blocking Discord and Patreon can have no less impact on casual users because Discord is the most popular platform of gamers, online community and developers. Patreon is the platform that creators use for fan support around the world, raising the question of whether blocking the entire platform may be a too broad measure.

There are no clear reports of how long Discord and Patreon will be blocked in Cambodia or how they will be appealed / corrected from the platform side.
