After Microsoft officially discontinued Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, the company came out with the Extended Security Updates program, or ESU, allowing casual users who aren't ready to move to Windows 11 to continue receiving security patches for another 1 year, originally covering October 13, 2026.

But most recently, Microsoft secretly updated the terms of the new Windows 10 ESU, extending the period for personal devices by one year, from the original to the end of 2026 to the end of October 12, 2027. It is equal that Windows 10 users will still have a full security update for another year without immediately moving to Windows 11.

By extension, this does not mean that Windows 10 will return to full support as it was, because ESU will only cover major security updates, no new features, no user experience enhancements, and no security-related general bug fixes.

For the average user, the ESU application has the same conditions: you can open the settings sync through Windows Backup for no extra charge, or use Microsoft Rewards for 1,000 points or a one-time payment of $30. One Microsoft account can use up to 10 devices.

Applicable machines must be Windows 10 version 22H2 in the Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations version and must install the latest update before applying. It also requires a Microsoft account with add permissions on board.

Enterprise systems such as Domain Join, Entra ID or MDM cannot use ESU programs for general users. A plan is required for the organization.
