8GB is enough? Ask yourself.
This event saw a few people smiling in the corner of their mouths after Microsoft updated their instructions on the new Surface purchase selection, stating that 8GB of RAM was enough for everyday Windows 11 applications such as web play, video viewing, document work, online meetings, or online lessons.
.
It sounds normal, but what has stumbled many people is that over the years, Microsoft has been one of the companies that has pushed harder that modern computers, especially AI PC and Copilot + PC, should start with 16GB of RAM because the AI features on the machine require more resources.
.
In other words, the memory was "8GB is not enough," but now that the new Surface has returned 8GB of RAM to lower the price, Microsoft has to say that 8GB is actually okay in general use.
.
However, the words "fair use" and "long-term use" may not be the same, because although 8GB of RAM can still open the web, run documents, or watch movies, if you open multiple tabs, use multiple programs at once, edit images, play games, or want to use the full Copilot + PC AI feature, Microsoft still recommends using 16GB or more of RAM.
.
Importantly, Microsoft's own Copilot + PC standard also sets the same minimum of 16GB of RAM, so 8GB of RAM is better suited to general appliances, not full AI PC machines.
.
So the point became Microsoft's small counterpoint, because it previously tried to mold the image that 16GB was the new standard of the AI-era PC. But when parts prices, especially RAM and SSD, began to rise from the AI Data Center stream, the company had to return, opening the way for 8GB RAM machines to still have a stand in the market again.
