I got to use the laser printer at my uni for this project!!!
The idea was to choose a word and then make something (using any medium) that represents the word conceptually and uses the actual word.
Personally I like the conservation angle that I took with this piece. I think that the contrast of the rough cut with the perfectly manufactured lettering is an interesting contrast.
... Read moreYou guys, I'm still buzzing from finishing my first big art project of the semester! When my professor gave us the brief – pick a word, represent it conceptually, and incorporate the word itself – my mind immediately went to 'SEVERED.' I wanted something that felt raw and impactful, but also had a deeper meaning. And guess what? I got to use the incredible laser printer at my university to bring it to life!
The concept behind 'SEVERED' was really about environmental conservation for me. Imagine forests being severed, natural connections breaking. I wanted to show that stark reality. Using a rough, natural wood slice felt perfect for the canvas. The contrast I aimed for was between this organic, 'rough cut' material and the precise, almost surgical precision of the 'perfectly manufactured lettering' that the laser printer creates. It’s like nature meeting technology, or destruction meeting creation. That's why the word 'SEVERED' being so meticulously 'laser-engraved' into the organic wood felt so powerful to me. It highlights the sharp, irreversible impact we can have.
Getting to use the laser printer was an experience in itself! First, I had to prepare my design in a vector graphics program, making sure the 'SEVERED' text was exactly how I wanted it. Then, I selected this beautiful, uneven wood slice – I specifically looked for one with character, knowing the imperfections would add to the overall message. Loading it into the machine felt like a big deal, and watching the laser work its magic was mesmerizing. You could smell the burning wood, see the smoke, and slowly, painstakingly, the dark brown letters emerged. It was so cool to see my vision come to life in such a precise and permanent way! The text "Laser engraved!" on the final piece really emphasizes that unique process.
Honestly, I was a bit intimidated at first. I’d never really used a laser printer for art before, and balancing the conceptual depth with the technical execution was a challenge. There were moments I worried the wood would burn unevenly or the text wouldn't align perfectly. But pushing through those doubts and seeing the final 'laser-engraved wood slice' was so rewarding. It taught me so much about working with new mediums and trusting my artistic intuition.
For any fellow college students or aspiring artists out there, my biggest tip is to explore all the resources your university offers! Seriously, don't be afraid to take advantage of those amazing workshops and specialized equipment, whether it's a laser printer, a 3D printer, or a darkroom. They open up so many creative possibilities you might not have considered. Also, really dive deep into your conceptual ideas. The more thought you put into why you're making something, the more impactful the final piece will be. And remember, sometimes the imperfections, like the natural 'rough cut' of my wood, can add the most beauty and meaning to your work.
I’m so thrilled with how my 'first art project of the semester' turned out. It feels like a true representation of my thoughts and skills. What do you all think? Have you ever used a laser printer for art, or worked on a conceptual piece that really challenged you? I'd love to hear your experiences!
