Commander Diaries Tidus
Hey everyone! I'm absolutely stoked to dive deeper into the new Tidus, Yuna's Guardian card that's making its way into Magic: The Gathering's Commander format. When I first saw this "Legendary Creature-Human Warrior" from the upcoming Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set, my mind immediately went to the rich lore from Final Fantasy X and how it translates into this fantastic card game. Let's talk about the 'origins of' this card, both in terms of its character and its place in MTG. Tidus, as many of us know, is the star of FFX, and his story is deeply intertwined with Yuna. The card's flavor text, "Listen to my story. This... May be our last chance. I shall guard Yuna with all I have," perfectly captures his dedication and the dramatic narrative of the game. His abilities are a brilliant reflection of this. The ability to move a counter from one creature to another truly embodies him "gifting my strength, my power upon Yuna and her legion," empowering his allies. This mechanic feels incredibly thematic, showing his protective nature and his role in bolstering the team. And the fact that this card is a collaboration between "Wizards of the Coast" and "FFC SQUARE ENIX" makes it even more special, bringing beloved characters into our favorite card game. Now, how do we make "Tidus, Yuna's Guardian" shine in the Commander card game? His primary abilities revolve around counters and combat. At the beginning of combat on your turn, being able to strategically move a counter is huge. Imagine moving a +1/+1 counter from a creature that's about to be blocked or removed to another, ensuring your valuable counters aren't wasted, or even empowering an unblocked attacker for more damage. This opens up so many possibilities, from shifting power to key attackers to saving loyalty counters on planeswalkers by moving them off a damaged one. But the real power surge comes with his "Cheer" ability. Whenever one or more creatures you control with counters on them deal "combat damage" to a player, you get to draw a card AND "proliferate"! This is an absolute engine for value. Drawing cards is always fantastic in Commander, keeping your hand full of options. Proliferate, on the other hand, supercharges all your counters. Think about it: every +1/+1 counter gets bigger, every loyalty counter on your planeswalkers increases, every charge counter on your artifacts multiplies. This means Tidus synergizes incredibly well with decks that already care about counters, be it +1/+1 counters, sagas, planeswalkers, or even poison counters if you're feeling spicy! To maximize Tidus, you'll want to include cards that easily generate counters, like Hardened Scales, Kurbis, or even just creatures with enters-the-battlefield +1/+1 counters. Then, pair them with evasive creatures or combat tricks to ensure you're consistently connecting with "combat damage" and triggering that sweet draw and proliferate. I'm already envisioning a Simic (Blue/Green) or even Bant (White/Blue/Green) build, focusing on creature evasion, counter generation, and then letting Tidus push them all to the next level. This card isn't just a nostalgic nod; it's a powerful new piece for anyone looking to build a counter-focused or combat-oriented "card game" deck. I'm so excited to brew some decks with him – what kind of strategies are you all thinking of? Let me know!
