El chico
Wow, looking back at quarantine feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it? When it first hit, honestly, I was dreading it. The news was scary, and the idea of being stuck at home felt suffocating. Everyone talked about the isolation, the challenges, the boredom… and yeah, those parts were real. But if I'm being totally honest, for me, 'quarantine wasn't that bad' at all. In fact, there were so many unexpected silver linings that I actually look back on that time with a strange fondness. As 'El chico' around the house, I initially thought my days would be filled with endless video games and maybe some Netflix. And sure, there was plenty of that! But then something shifted. With sports canceled and friends only accessible through screens, I found myself with a lot more time on my hands. Time I usually spent rushing to school, practices, or just out and about. Suddenly, I started noticing things. The way the light hit my room in the morning, the birds outside my window, the countless books on my shelf I'd never touched. My mom, bless her, decided it was the perfect time for us to learn to bake. I always thought baking was boring, but mixing ingredients, watching dough rise, and then eating the warm results? That was a game-changer. We made bread, cookies, even attempted a complicated cake. It wasn't just about the food; it was about the laughs, the mess, and the quiet conversations we had while waiting for things to bake. I even started helping out in the garden, something I'd always avoided. Digging in the dirt, planting seeds, seeing tiny sprouts emerge – it was incredibly satisfying and a totally new experience for me. I also picked up my old guitar again. For years it had just sat in the corner, gathering dust. But during quarantine, I had no excuses. I watched tutorials, practiced scales, and slowly, awkwardly, started playing some of my favorite songs. It was a slow process, but the feeling of finally nailing a chord progression was amazing. It gave me a sense of accomplishment that went beyond schoolwork or gaming. And let's not forget the family time! Before quarantine, we were all constantly on the go. Dinners were rushed, and weekends were packed. Suddenly, we were eating every meal together, playing board games, and just… being present. We even started taking long walks around the neighborhood, discovering hidden paths and parks we never knew existed. It sounds cheesy, but those simple moments of connection really made a difference. So, while I know quarantine was incredibly tough for many, and I don't want to minimize anyone's struggles, for me, it offered a unique pause. It was a chance to slow down, rediscover forgotten hobbies, connect with my family in new ways, and appreciate the little things. It taught 'El chico' a lot about resilience and finding joy in unexpected places. What about you? Did you find any unexpected positives during that strange time?
