... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to share a little adventure I had recently that brought me so much joy. I spent a lovely afternoon exploring and stumbled upon what I like to call a hidden gem – a magnificent 'mora' patch! For those wondering, 'mora' is what I grew up calling these incredible berries, but you probably know them better as wild blackberries. I know some people might wonder, is mora a vegetable? It's a common question, and it's easy to see why with how they grow. But botanically speaking, these beauties are definitely fruits! They’re the perfect sweet treat nature provides, packed with flavor and goodness. My patch was absolutely overflowing, a dense vine or bush laden with numerous clusters of blackberries. It was such a sight to behold! Identifying these wild treasures is part of the fun. I noticed manyberries were dark purple and ripe, just glistening in the sun, ready to be picked. But what's even more exciting is seeing others that are still red and developing, nestled among lush green leaves. It means I'll have more delicious 'mora' to enjoy in the coming weeks! The contrast of the dark, ripe berries against the vibrant green foliage and the reddish, younger ones is just stunning. When you're out foraging for your own 'mora' (or blackberries!), always make sure the area is safe and free from pesticides. Look for those characteristic clusters and the tell-tale color change from red to that deep, rich purple-black. That's how you know they're perfectly ripe and at their sweetest. I usually bring a small basket or container, and gently pull them off the stem. Be careful of thorns though, these wild bushes can be quite prickly! Once you have your harvest, the possibilities are endless! Of course, eating them fresh right off the vine is pure bliss. But I also love making simple blackberry jam – it captures that summer flavor perfectly. They're fantastic in smoothies, baked into pies or crumbles, or even just sprinkled over yogurt or oatmeal for a healthy breakfast. They add such a wonderful tart-sweet punch to any dish. Beyond their incredible taste, these 'mora' are also little powerhouses of nutrition. They’re full of antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, making them a delicious way to boost your health. There’s something so satisfying about enjoying food you’ve collected yourself from nature. It’s a connection to the earth that I truly cherish. If you get the chance, I highly recommend looking for your own 'mora' patch this season. It’s a rewarding experience, and you get to enjoy some of the freshest, most delicious berries around. Happy foraging, everyone!
