Big Badda Boom

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my absolute favorite way to play Gale in Baldur's Gate 3, especially when you want to see some serious pyrotechnics and big damage numbers. I call it my 'Big Badda Boom' strategy, and it's all about lighting up the battlefield with devastating fire spells! I know Gale is often seen as a support wizard, but trust me, he can be an absolute powerhouse damage dealer. My journey to discovering this really started when I realized how effectively his fire spells can chain reactions. At Lv4 as a Human Wizard, Gale gains access to some crucial abilities and spell slots that make this build shine. The core of this 'Big Badda Boom' is the Chromatic Orb: Fire spell. This isn't just any damage spell; when you hurl that fiery energy, it doesn't just deal direct damage (like the (1)3-24 Fire damage I've seen it dish out). Crucially, it creates a Burning surface upon impact. This is where the magic truly happens! Enemies caught in the initial blast take damage, and then they continue to take damage every turn they remain in the burning area. Plus, if you hit an Oil Barrel or other flammable objects (which the game has plenty of), you can cause a glorious Explosion that spreads even more fire and damage. I typically cast Chromatic Orb: Fire using a Level 1 Spell Slot as my Action. It’s surprisingly efficient for the chaos it creates. What I love to do is use Quick Targeting to aim for clusters of enemies or, even better, near those tempting Oil Barrels. The satisfaction of seeing multiple enemies catch fire and then explode is just *chef's kiss*. Remember, if you use your Bonus Action for something else, you can still get that powerful Action spell off. To keep the 'Big Badda Boom' going, Arcane Recovery is your best friend. As a wizard, Gale can use this feature to regain expended Spell Slots, meaning more fireballs and chromatic orbs to go around. I always keep an eye on my spell slot management, knowing that I can replenish some of my lower-level slots to keep the firestorm rolling. Sometimes, if I'm feeling fancy or need that extra punch, I'll even Upcast Chromatic Orb for even more intense damage and a wider burning radius. I had this one memorable encounter where Torgga and Barton were grouped up, posing a real threat. I spotted an Oil Barrel between them. I positioned Gale carefully, used Quick Targeting, and unleashed a Chromatic Orb: Fire. The barrel ignited, creating a massive Explosion! Both Torgga and Barton failed their Saving Throws against the blast. Gale blasted Torgga for 13 Fire damage and Barton for 29 Fire damage! It was incredible. Even Gale himself took a tiny bit of splash damage (9 Fire damage), but he quickly succeeded on his own Saving Throw, proving that sometimes you have to risk a little to gain a lot! The immediate result was two major threats down and a satisfying 45 xp gain for the party. For those looking to replicate this, my advice is to always scout the environment for flammable objects. Potions of oil, explosive barrels – they're all your best friends. Don't be afraid to experiment with positioning and timing. Sometimes, even a simple Bless spell from another caster can help ensure your crucial Chromatic Orb hits its mark, especially against high-AC targets.
