Adapting Pomodoro for ADHD Students!!

✨You might have heard of the pomodoro technique, but if you struggle with sitting down for long periods of time to study and you get distracted easily then this adaptation of the technique is perfect for you!

📊Shorten work intervals - instead of 25 minute intervals try 15 minutes. This will help if you have a shorter attention span ;)

📃Set goals - before each work session make sure you set a clear goal that you can actually accomplish within the 15 minutes. This is important because it will give you a purpose and help you focus.

For your breaks

🌊Sensory tools - these can be great to help you immediately get into break mode and start relaxing your mind.

⏲️Set a timer - this is super important so you don't lose track of time or get distracted.

📱No phone - this one is specific to ADHD because if you go on you rphone on your break it's more likely that you will get sucked into a doom scroll or social media an don't be able to get back to work. I say just avoid the phone all together.

... Read moreHey fellow students! If you're anything like me, with an ADHD brain, the idea of a traditional 25-minute Pomodoro might feel like trying to run a marathon blindfolded! That's why I'm so passionate about adapting this method to actually work for us. The core idea of Pomodoro is simple: focused work followed by a short break. But for ADHD, those 'focused work' blocks often need a little tweak to truly harness our unique brain power and manage those bursts of energy or sudden distractions. First, let's talk about those shorter work intervals. While 25 minutes might be the standard, for many with ADHD, that's just too long to maintain consistent, high-quality focus without our minds wandering. My go-to is 15 minutes. Why 15? It's long enough to dive into a task and make meaningful progress, but short enough that the finish line feels achievable. This frequent 'win' of completing a block helps with dopamine regulation, which is super important for staying motivated with ADHD. If 15 still feels like a stretch, don't be afraid to try 10-minute bursts. The key is finding your sweet spot where you can genuinely focus before needing that mental reset. Next up, goal setting – and I can't stress this enough when you're adapting Pomodoro for ADHD. Before each 15-minute sprint, set a *micro-goal*. Instead of "study Biology," make it "read two pages of Chapter 5 and highlight key terms," or "solve three practice problems." This isn't just about knowing what to do; it's about giving your hyperfocus a clear target. Without a specific goal, it's easy for our minds to get caught up in tangents or perfectionism, losing valuable time. These clear, achievable goals are your roadmap to staying on track during each ‘work session’ and feeling productive rather than overwhelmed. Now for the breaks, which are just as crucial as the work itself. I mentioned avoiding your phone – and honestly, that's a non-negotiable for me. My ADHD brain can get sucked into a doom scroll faster than I can say "productivity hack!" Instead, use your 5-10 minute break to genuinely disconnect and reset. This is where sensory tools shine! A fidget toy, a quick stretch, looking out the window, or even just taking a few deep breaths can help ground you. You could also grab a quick sip of water or look over your desk setup – maybe admire that plant or cool planet-shaped lamp! Creating an organized, clutter-free 'study setup' helps minimize visual distractions when you return to your task, making the transition smoother. Applying this adapted Pomodoro to different study tasks can also make a huge difference. If you're tackling 'pomodoro reading', break your reading material into manageable chunks. For a complex essay, dedicate one 15-minute block to brainstorming, the next to outlining, and subsequent blocks to drafting specific sections. Don't try to do everything at once! This method makes even daunting tasks feel approachable. Finally, think about your overall 'pomodoro technique study schedule example'. I like to plan 3-4 fifteen-minute work blocks with short breaks in between, then take a longer 20-30 minute break. During that longer break, I might move around, grab a snack, or even listen to a song. This rhythm helps me maintain momentum throughout the day without burning out. Remember, this isn't about rigid rules, but about building flexible routines that support your unique ADHD brain for consistent focus and productivity.
