How I Saved My GPA (and My Sanity 😮‍💨)

I won’t lie, my GPA was looking rough at one point. I thought I’d completely ruined my chances, but it wasn’t over. What helped me turn it around was being super intentional with my class choices. I picked electives and gen eds I knew I could handle! Not to take the easy way out, but to rebuild my confidence and give my GPA the boost it needed. Just one or two solid grades actually made a huge difference.

I also changed how I studied. No more last-minute cram sessions. I started doing short study blocks during the week and made myself go to office hours even when I didn’t feel like it. Little habits like that added up fast. It wasn’t some magical overnight fix, but it worked. The GPA glow-up is real 📈💅

... Read moreLooking back, picking the right classes was truly foundational in my GPA turnaround. It wasn't just about finding 'easy' classes, but rather identifying subjects I genuinely found interesting or areas where I knew my strengths would naturally shine. I learned to spend dedicated time on my university's course catalog, sometimes even checking Canvas for syllabi from previous semesters, to get a real feel for the workload and teaching style. This strategy made a huge difference in finding those enjoyable electives that could genuinely boost my GPA without feeling like a soul-crushing chore. Balancing a tough core class with an elective that requires less intense study became my secret weapon. Beyond just doing 'short study blocks,' I discovered the incredible power of active learning. Instead of passively rereading my notes, I'd quiz myself, explain complex concepts out loud as if I was teaching someone, or create detailed flashcards. Spaced repetition tools quickly became my best friend, especially for subjects heavy on memorization. I also learned that not all study methods work for everyone; it was a process of experimentation to find what truly clicked for me. Sometimes, just changing your environment, like moving from your dorm room to a quiet spot in the library, can make a world of difference in your focus. Effective time management and scheduling became non-negotiable. This is where my 'realistic weekly schedule' – often color-coded on my iPad – entered the picture. I stopped just writing down assignments and started blocking out specific, dedicated times for studying, breaks, and even social activities. It was absolutely crucial to factor in enough time to stay on top of all due dates, not just for big projects but for smaller readings, quizzes, and even discussion board posts. Over-scheduling quickly leads to burnout, so I learned to be brutally honest with myself about how much I could realistically achieve in a day. When tasks felt overwhelming, I trained myself to break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. I also started leveraging university resources like never before. Those office hours weren't just for when I was completely lost; I started going even when I felt okay, just to clarify concepts or get early feedback on drafts. Building a relationship with my professors proved incredibly beneficial, not just for my grades but also for mentorship and future opportunities. And don't forget about tutoring centers or academic advisors – they are literally there to help you navigate challenging courses and understand your academic path better. Sometimes just having someone else explain a complex topic from a different angle makes it click into place. Finally, I had to remind myself that improving my GPA was a marathon, not a sprint. There are always going to be tough days. What helped me was focusing intently on progress, not striving for unrealistic perfection. I learned to celebrate small wins and not beat myself up over every minor setback. Getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking real, restorative breaks are just as important as studying. Your sanity, like mine, is absolutely crucial for long-term academic success. It’s all about building sustainable habits that support both your grades and your overall well-being.
