Studying the Night Before an Exam? Read This First

Night before one of my hardest exams, I was sitting at my desk surrounded by snacks, notes everywhere, and full-on panic mode activated 😅. I had no plan, just vibes and a highlighter. But instead of spiraling, I told myself, “Okay, let’s not waste time.” I ditched the rereading and started quizzing myself, literally saying answers out loud and scribbling everything I remembered on scrap paper. It wasn’t cute, but it made me realize what I actually knew... and what I didn’t.

I also made the mistake before of pulling all-nighters, thinking more time = better results. But that night, I gave myself a cut-off. I reviewed what I could, set my alarm a little earlier, and got about 6 hours of sleep. And honestly? I walked into that exam feeling way less fried than usual. I wasn’t 100% confident, but I was clear-headed and way more focused. Now whenever I’m in a last-minute crunch, I stick to that plan: active recall, focus on high-yield stuff, and no skipping sleep. It’s not magic, but it seriously helped me survive.

... Read morePreparing for an exam the night before can be daunting, but with the right strategies, you can effectively utilize your time and enhance your performance. One key approach is to focus on practice rather than rereading. Engaging with the material actively helps improve retention of key concepts rather than passively reviewing notes. Incorporating active recall, where you test yourself on the content instead of re-reading, can significantly boost your memory. For example, try writing out key formulas, terms, and high-yield material on flashcards or scrap paper. This method forces you to retrieve information, reinforcing your memory and highlighting areas that require more attention. Another essential tip is to prioritize sleep, as it plays a critical role in cognitive function and memory consolidation. Aim for 6-8 hours of quality sleep before the exam. Sleep deprivation can impair your focus and retention, leading to poorer performance. Establish a cut-off time for studying to ensure you get the rest you need to approach the exam with a clear mind. Lastly, maintain a level of calm and manage your anxiety. Techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or light exercise can help regulate your stress levels. When you feel more relaxed, you can absorb information better and approach your exam with confidence.
