Why I Like to Study in Public!

Okay I know not everyone agrees with me on this but hear me out! Studying in public actually helps me stay focused 10x more than if I’m just at home in my bed or on the couch 😅 When I go to a coffee shop or the library, I feel like I HAVE to be productive. It’s like I’m being watched even if I’m not lol… And that weird little pressure makes me stop procrastinating and actually get stuff DONE. I don’t want to be the girl scrolling on her phone for two hours while her laptop is open with 0 tabs closed.

Also, the vibes?? Immaculate. I bring my little drink (or buy one if I’m at a coffee shop), my headphones, maybe a cute tote bag full of supplies, and I feel like the main character. Sometimes I’ll even plan my outfit so I feel more put together and ready to work (it weirdly helps my mindset).

Also when I study in public, I actually finish what I need to do faster. There’s something about knowing I don’t want to be out forever, so I’ll just hyper-focus and then head home and relax guilt-free.

Let me know if you’re a public-study person or a stay-home-and-stare-at-the-wall person 😭🫶

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard why I love studying in public, but maybe you're wondering how to make it work for you, especially if you're prone to distractions or not sure where to start. Trust me, I've been there! After many trial-and-error sessions, I've picked up a few practical tips that really help turn any public spot into a productivity powerhouse. First off, choosing your perfect study sanctuary is crucial. Not every coffee shop or library is created equal! I like to scout out places with good natural light – it just instantly lifts my mood. Look for spots with accessible power outlets (a non-negotiable for me!) and, ideally, comfortable seating. Sometimes a lively café with a gentle buzz is perfect for filtering out distractions, almost like white noise. Other times, I crave the hushed silence of a library, where the only sounds are turning pages and soft keyboard clicks. Finding a spot with good vibes, maybe like one of those modern, airy spaces with plants I’ve seen, can genuinely inspire you. It makes you want to stay and get things done. Then, there's my essential public study toolkit. Beyond my laptop, my noise-cancelling headphones are an absolute game-changer. They create an instant personal bubble, letting me dive deep into my work without getting sidetracked by conversations or clanking dishes. A portable charger is another must-have; there’s nothing worse than running out of battery mid-equation! And, of course, a cute refillable water bottle keeps me hydrated. If I'm at a coffee shop, I always treat myself to a little something – an iced coffee, perhaps, just like the one I snapped a picture of! It feels like a small reward and also gives me a reason to occupy their table guilt-free. Battling distractions in a public setting might seem daunting, but it's totally manageable. My main strategy is setting focused work intervals using a timer. I'll do 45 minutes of intense study, then take a short 10-minute break. During that break, I allow myself to check my phone, grab a refill, or just observe my surroundings. This structured approach prevents me from endlessly scrolling or getting lost in people-watching. I also make sure my workspace is tidy – a cluttered area can lead to a cluttered mind, even in public. Finally, it’s about cultivating your study mindset. I often find that just the act of getting dressed, planning my outfit, and physically going to a dedicated study space helps me mentally switch gears. It’s like I’m telling my brain, "Okay, we're here to work now." I’ve even noticed that seeing others focused and productive around me, like that woman with glasses deep in her laptop at the library, subtly motivates me to do the same. It's a fantastic way to feel part of a productive community, even if you're studying solo. Give these tips a try – you might just find your new favorite way to conquer your coursework!
