Hiking the Domingo Baca canyon in the winter

Hiking with a Golden Retriever in New Mexico can be challenging. In the summer, it’s only early mornings or late evenings, but in the winter there’s a little more flexibility for mid day hikes. The Domingo Baca trail is on the Albuquerque side of the Sandias and is a challenging trail that passes by a 70 year old commercial flight wreck. My dog and I did not go far enough up the trail this time to see plane wreckage, but we did find some snow.

This trail not only challenges hikers with its rugged terrain but also rewards them with picturesque snow-covered landscapes. If you're a dog owner, bringing your Golden Retriever along can enhance your adventure, as these friendly companions thrive in outdoor environments. To fully enjoy your hike, it's advisable to visit during midday when temperatures are more amiable. Winter hiking also presents unique opportunities to witness the serene beauty of nature, including potential views of wildlife in the snow. Just ensure you're well-equipped with appropriate gear to navigate potentially icy patches along the trail. Additionally, safety should always be a priority. Ensure your dog is leashed, especially around steep drops or challenging sections. Inform yourself about the trail's terrain and conditions before setting out, and remember to bring water and snacks for both you and your pet. With proper planning and awareness, a hike through the Domingo Baca canyon in winter can be a memorable escapade for you and your furry friend.
