... Read moreStepping into the Elizabeth Catlett exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum was an experience I won't soon forget. The moment I saw the large green sign outside, I knew I was in for something special, and it certainly delivered. This exhibition isn't just a collection of art; it's a profound journey through the life and revolutionary spirit of an artist who used her craft to ignite change. Inside, the curation was brilliant. The comprehensive timeline of her life, as mentioned in the original review, truly grounds the entire experience, showing how her art evolved with her powerful activism and personal story. I was particularly struck by the diverse range of mediums she mastered, showcasing her incredible versatility and unwavering vision. It’s clear she didn't just create art for beauty, but as a potent form of communication and resistance. Among the first pieces that captivated me was a stunning wooden sculpture of a standing female figure, with her head tilted back – so much emotion, strength, and vulnerability conveyed in a single form. Further on, a powerful bronze bust of a man on a white pedestal commanded attention, surrounded by intricate framed prints illustrating her mastery of printmaking. There was one particularly poignant black and white print featuring a woman's face with a head covering above a cityscape, which resonated deeply with themes of urban life, resilience, and the quiet dignity of everyday people. The gallery also showcased several striking wooden busts of human heads, each unique and expressive, arranged thoughtfully on white pedestals against vibrant green and blue walls, creating a truly immersive space. Another section featured a compelling black and white print showing a hand holding bullets above a scene of people looking upwards, a stark and powerful reminder of the social and political messages embedded in her work, challenging viewers to confront difficult truths about injustice and hope. What truly makes this exhibition breath-taking is not just the aesthetic beauty or technical skill of her pieces, but the profound stories they tell. Catlett was not just an artist; she was a voice for justice, identity, and empowerment, particularly for Black women and marginalized communities. Her work transcends time, speaking to ongoing struggles and triumphs that are still relevant today. It's impossible to walk through this exhibition without feeling a deep connection to her message and being moved by her enduring legacy. If you're planning a day trip to New York City, or even if you're a local looking for an enriching cultural experience, I cannot recommend the Elizabeth Catlett show enough. It's more than just an art display; it's a journey through history, an encounter with revolutionary spirit, and a powerful reflection on humanity. Allow yourself ample time to truly absorb each piece and the accompanying narratives. You'll leave feeling inspired and deeply moved, just as I did.

Dear Black Art, meet four artists worth sharing.
Who came to mind when you read these? Augusta Savage built a harp out of Black voices rising. Charles White painted Black dignity when the world refused to see it. Elizabeth Catlett carved strength into every line. John Holyfield paints Black joy like it deserves to fill the whole sky.
