Climbing in Greece 🧗🏽‍♀️

... Read moreMy recent trip to Meteora, Greece, wasn't just another climbing expedition; it was an immersion into a landscape so unique, it feels otherworldly. You might have seen these incredible rock formations featured in documentaries or even on shows like John Oliver’s, marveling at their sheer geological wonder and the ancient monasteries perched atop them. But to truly experience Meteora, one must engage with its vertical world, and that's exactly what I did, with my climbing gear in tow. From the moment I arrived, the towering rock formations commanded attention. My climbing weekend diary quickly filled with notes about incredible multi-pitch routes that wound their way up these colossal pillars. Each ascent offered a new perspective, a different panoramic view of the valley below, dotted with winding roads, quaint villages, and even a cultivated vineyard. The feeling of reaching a rocky peak, signing a makeshift summit book entry, and looking out at the vast expanse is truly unparalleled. I remember one particular climb where the golden glow of the sunset cast long shadows across the landscape, turning the entire area into a breathtaking masterpiece. Climbing in Meteora isn't just about the physical challenge; it's about connecting with a place steeped in history and spirituality. As I managed my ropes on the rock face, I often found myself gazing at the monasteries, some dedicated to figures like Panagia (the All-Holy Virgin Mary), clinging impossibly to the cliffs. It's a humbling experience to share these ancient, sacred spaces with such a vibrant climbing community. The contrast between ancient devotion and modern adventure creates a truly distinctive atmosphere that you won't find anywhere else. And it's not just the climbing that makes Meteora special. The natural environment is full of surprises. On one of our drives along a winding road, we even had a heartwarming encounter with a tiny baby turtle, its distinctive patterned shell gleaming in the sun, which we safely helped off the road. These small moments add to the richness of the journey. Whether you're a seasoned climber or simply someone drawn to extraordinary landscapes, Meteora offers an adventure that will stay with you long after you've descended from its majestic heights.
