It's so much fun watching my leopard gecko, Leo, just *live his best life*! Sometimes I get asked, 'What do leopard geckos actually like to do?' And honestly, it's more than just sitting under their heat lamp. They have quite a few favorite activities that keep them busy and happy, and understanding these can really help you provide the best environment for your little scaly friend. First off, exploring and hunting are huge for them. Even though Leo gets his mealworms and crickets delivered right to him, he still loves the thrill of the chase! I've found that tong-feeding live insects occasionally really brings out his natural predator instincts. He'll stalk them, wiggle his tail, and then pounce – it’s adorable and great exercise. Sometimes I even scatter a few insects in his enclosure so he has to forage a bit, which is another natural behavior they enjoy. It's like a mini treasure hunt for bugs! Basking and finding cozy hiding spots are also top priorities. Geckos are cold-blooded, so regulating their body temperature is essential. Leo has a favorite warm spot under his heat lamp where he'll stretch out and soak up the warmth. But equally important are his hiding places – he has a few caves and coconut hides scattered around his tank, and he rotates between them. One is a moist hide, which is absolutely crucial, especially when he's getting ready to shed. He loves to go in there to loosen his skin; it’s like his personal spa! Providing a variety of hiding spots gives them a sense of security and choice, which reduces stress. Beyond the essentials, climbing and digging are often overlooked. While leopard geckos aren't arboreal, they do appreciate some low-level climbing opportunities. I've got some smooth rocks and a sturdy piece of cork bark in Leo's tank, and he occasionally scales them to get a better view or just for a change of scenery. And digging! They absolutely love to dig. I use a substrate mix that allows for some burrowing, and it's fascinating to watch him rearrange things or dig a little hidey-hole for himself. It's great mental stimulation. I’ve also noticed my gecko enjoys just observing his surroundings. Sometimes he'll just perch on a rock, watching everything outside his tank. It's a reminder that even though they might seem low-key, they're aware of their world. Gentle handling, once they're comfortable, can also be a positive interaction, though it's more about building trust than a “fun activity” for them in the human sense. Ultimately, keeping a leopard gecko engaged means understanding their natural behaviors and providing opportunities for them to express those instincts in a safe, enriched environment. Seeing Leo happy and active makes all the effort worth it!
