Get your braids to last longer

Knotless braids aren’t meant to last 3 months - but they shouldn’t last a week either (unless you’re ready to take them out) so I included 3 ways that’ll help keep your hair looking fresh longer.

👒Wrap your hair EVERY NIGHT or have a SATIN pillowcase. I thought the pillowcase was a scam - it is not lol - it’s amazing but remember satin stains so don’t oil your scalp - wear no bonnet and lay down - you’ll wake up looking like a crunch bar.

🧴Use mousse or a wrap setting lotion when you’re feeling frizzy! It’s not a save all - but it does help tame the hair without alot of build up like you would see if you used a heavy gel/edge control.

👩🏽‍🦱 Oil your scalp! It’s exposed lol now I know a lot of people say “don’t oil your scalp” but I think it depends on the oil and I’ve been have my my scalp oiled since a baby. 😂😂 If you are overwhelmed by the oil game - start with Jojoba Oil - it’s the oil that mimics our scalps sebum the most. That way you don’t feel weighed down or build up.

If this was helpful - let me know in the comments! 🤞🏽also these tips can work for any protective style!

... Read moreBuilding on the essential tips I shared earlier, I've gathered even more insights from my own journey with knotless braids to help you truly maximize their lifespan and keep your natural hair thriving underneath. It's all about consistency and understanding what your hair needs! Mastering Your Nighttime Protection Beyond the Basics While a satin pillowcase or bonnet is a game-changer, let's talk about the nuances. I've found that not all satin is created equal; look for a high-quality satin or even true silk if your budget allows, as these materials offer superior glide and moisture retention. For those with really long braids, a satin bonnet might not cut it. That's where a large silk or satin scarf comes in handy. I often use a scarf to wrap my hair securely at the base, creating a pineapple-like bun on top of my head, then cover it with a bonnet for extra security. This technique helps prevent the braids from being crushed, reduces friction, and keeps those delicate edges laid down, significantly preventing tangles and frizz overnight. Remember, the goal is to create a barrier against the abrasive cotton of pillows while keeping your hair's natural oils locked in. Advanced Scalp Nurturing: Beyond Just Oiling Yes, oiling your scalp 1-2 times a week is crucial, as I mentioned, but let's dive deeper into how and what oils can do for you. Jojoba oil is fantastic because it mimics our natural sebum, so it's unlikely to cause build-up. However, I also swear by incorporating other oils depending on my scalp's needs. For instance, if you experience itchiness (which is common with braids), a few drops of tea tree oil mixed into your carrier oil (like jojoba or grapeseed) can be incredibly soothing due to its antiseptic properties. For stimulating growth around your edges and hairline, a light castor oil massage can be beneficial, but be mindful of its thickness. When applying, I use an applicator bottle with a thin nozzle to get the oil directly onto my scalp, parting my braids gently. This ensures even distribution without over-saturating the braids themselves. Don't forget to gently massage your scalp after applying to stimulate blood flow and help the oil absorb. The Art of Gentle Cleansing While Braided Many people avoid washing their braids, fearing frizz, but a clean scalp is a healthy scalp, and it's essential for longevity! My routine involves diluting a clarifying, sulfate-free shampoo with water in an applicator bottle. I then apply this mixture directly to my scalp in sections, gently massaging with my fingertips – never scrubbing roughly. I avoid rubbing the shampoo down the length of the braids as this can cause frizz. Instead, the suds that rinse down are enough to cleanse the actual braid strands. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to help seal the cuticles. After washing, gently squeeze excess water from your braids with a microfiber towel (they're super absorbent and reduce friction compared to regular towels). Air drying is best, but if you need to speed it up, a hooded dryer on a low, cool setting works wonders. Ensure your braids are completely dry to prevent mildew or scalp issues. Keeping Your Braids Hydrated and Refreshed Beyond scalp care, the actual hair in your braids needs love too! While you want to avoid heavy creams that can cause build-up, a lightweight leave-in conditioner spray or a dedicated braid spray can make a huge difference. I like to mist my braids every couple of days, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. This helps to keep the hair supple, prevents dryness, and adds a healthy sheen. Some sprays also contain ingredients that help with frizz or have a refreshing scent. Just don't overdo it – a light mist is all you need. Conquering Frizz and Flyaways Mousse is great for refreshing, but for those stubborn flyaways around your hairline and part, a non-flaking edge control or a light gel applied with a small brush can work wonders. I've found that applying a tiny amount and then tying a silk scarf around my edges for 10-15 minutes helps to set them perfectly without looking greasy or stiff. And remember, minimal manipulation is key! The more you touch, pull, and play with your braids, the more likely they are to frizz up. Be gentle when styling and avoid tight ponytails or updos that pull on your scalp.
