3 Reasons I Regret Majoring in Cultural Studies

I don’t regret what I learned.

I regret that no one knows how to use it.

Cultural Studies changed how I see the world — but it didn’t change how the world sees me.

We’re not struggling because we’re lazy.

We’re struggling because our degrees weren’t built to translate into careers.

And the institutions that teach them? They rarely teach us how to build our own.

Here’s 3 reasons why I wish I didn’t major in Cultural Studies — at least, not alone.

... Read moreIt's a tough pill to swallow when your passion doesn't quite line up with career opportunities. My experience with Cultural Studies, feeling like there were 'few real jobs' and 'no pipeline after graduation,' isn't unique. Many graduates from various fields eventually find themselves asking if they picked the 'most regretted major' in retrospect. Beyond my own story, I've heard similar frustrations from friends in fine arts, certain humanities, or even some niche sciences. The common thread? Often, these majors, while intellectually stimulating and where the 'passion was real,' are 'not respected' in the corporate world, or their value isn't easily translated into a tangible skill set employers explicitly seek. The 'job market? Not so much,' becomes a harsh reality for many of us who chose degrees based purely on interest rather than practical career prospects. This disconnect between academic pursuit and professional reality leads to significant regret. So, what can we do to navigate this, whether you're choosing a major now or already a graduate feeling stuck? If you're currently in the process of selecting a major, my honest advice is to look beyond just your immediate interests. Research potential career paths, average salaries, and the actual demand for graduates in that field. Consider a double major or a minor in a more 'practical' field alongside your passion. Internships are absolutely crucial—they offer a glimpse into the real world and help you build a professional network before you even graduate. If you're already a graduate feeling like your degree might be a 'most regretted major,' please don't despair! As the saying goes, "it's strategy now." Focus on identifying and articulating your transferable skills: critical thinking, research, analytical reasoning, communication, and adaptability. These are highly valued across industries, even if their connection to your degree isn't immediately obvious. Seek out roles that value problem-solvers and strong communicators, even if they aren't direct applications of your specific major. Networking is key. Connect with alumni from your program who have successfully transitioned into various careers. Join professional groups, attend workshops, and don't be afraid to confidently explain how your unique major has prepared you for complex problem-solving and diverse perspectives. Consider acquiring practical, in-demand skills through online courses or certifications in areas like data analysis, digital marketing, or project management. Think about building an 'exit plan' if your current professional path isn't working – whether that's learning a new skill, starting a side hustle, or pursuing further education for a career pivot. Your education provides a valuable foundation; your strategic hustle and adaptability build the house.
