It feels surreal to finally have my New York Bar swearing-in ceremony date set for January 12, 2026! I know many of you are on a similar journey, anxiously awaiting your own dates or just starting to look into the process. So, I wanted to share a bit about what I've learned about securing these pivotal dates and what you can generally expect when your big day arrives. While my ceremony is scheduled for the Manhattan Appellate Court at 27 Madison Avenue, it’s important to remember that New York has four Appellate Divisions, each handling swearing-in ceremonies for their respective districts. The dates aren't always uniformly announced or available, and they can vary. Typically, after you pass the bar exam and complete all character and fitness requirements, you'll receive notification regarding your eligibility. From there, you'll be directed to information on how to schedule your swearing-in. For those in the First Department (Manhattan/Bronx), like me, you'll often find information directly on the Appellate Division, First Department's website, or through official communications from the court. It’s crucial to keep a close eye on these channels for updates on available dates throughout 2026 and beyond. I've heard from friends and mentors that the ceremony itself is a truly memorable event. Mine is scheduled for 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, and generally, these events are solemn yet celebratory. You'll typically arrive with your guests (if permitted, and usually there are limits) and check in. There might be a brief reception beforehand, or you'll be directed to the courtroom. The ceremony usually involves welcoming remarks, a speech from a presiding justice, and then the administration of the attorney's oath. This is the moment we've all worked so hard for! You might be sworn in individually or as a group. For me, just thinking about standing there, taking that oath, is incredibly moving. After the oath, there's often an opportunity for photos with justices or other officials, and you'll typically receive your certificate of admission. It's a day when all the late nights, the endless studying, and the sacrifices finally culminate in becoming an official member of the New York State Bar. My advice for anyone preparing for their own ceremony: dress professionally, arrive early, and soak in every moment. It's not just a formality; it's a profound recognition of your dedication and commitment to the legal profession. I'm already planning my outfit and thinking about who I'll invite to witness this significant milestone. Remember to double-check all details closer to your date, as court procedures can sometimes change. And most importantly, celebrate this incredible achievement! It's a testament to your hard work and perseverance. Good luck to everyone on their journey to the New York Bar – I can't wait to officially join your ranks on January 12, 2026!
