T'Challa's struggle with the intelligent force of evil in the world trying to bring him down, specifically in issue 3 of Christopher Priest's run on Black Panther. This evil is in the form of Mephisto, who Priest's notes throughout the series reminds us is basically Marvel's version of the devil.

T'Challa has come to the States to investigate the murder of a young girl at one of his charities. Unfortunately between tracking down the girl's murderer and the unrest going on in Wakanda, T'Challa's enemies, led by the villain Achebe, take over his country and exile him to America. Behind these enemies is Mephisto, who makes his move mentally against T'Challa in this issue.

Mephisto taunts T'Challa in Black Panther (vol. 3) #3 .

Behind these enemies is Mephisto, who makes his move mentally against T'Challa in this issue.

Mephisto makes T'Challa think he's back in time with his ex-fiance Monica Lynne in Black Panther (vol.3) #3 .

Mephisto tries to put T'Challa off-balance by creating visions that make T'Challa jump back and forth in his memories.

In one of these moments, T'Challa is back in time with his ex-fiancée Monica Lynne, an American singer who once saved T'Challa's life. It is at this point that Mephisto tells T'Challa all his problems in Wakanda can go away, if only T'Challa agrees to serve Mephisto.

T'Challa doesn't accept the evil one's offer. T'Challa, however, is shaken by Mephisto's visions.

It turns out that Mephisto’s whole plan was to try and make a deal for T’Challa’s soul because T’Challa has a noble soul. Mephisto continues to try different tactics and make different deals with T’Challa for this valuable prize.

​Mephisto, after bringing T’Challa into his realm and continuing to try and throw him off-balance with visions from his past, makes this offer: 6 million souls for T’Challa’s. T’Challa finally says yes to this deal, for two main reasons.

The first is that T’Challa is a good man. This sacrifice is very similar to what Paul states in Romans 9:3.

​The second reason is that T’Challa knows he is not alone. Thanks to the heart-shaped herb, T’Challa is connected to the panther god Bast, as well as all the other Black Panthers that have come before him.

​Mephisto bites off a little more than he can chew, quite literally, with T’Challa’s soul. In order not to be destroyed trying to consume all of the Black Panther souls, Mephisto is forced to concede to T’Challa and end his claim on and his hunt for the soul of Black Panther.

​One final note comes from earlier in the issue. Mephisto’s power is limited only to what is given him.
