As a small business and a self employed artist… I have to be a bit different than everyone else. No sick days. No paid vacations. No one expecting me to show up to work except me. Long hours and sometimes no pay. Sometimes it’s hard. Right now it is HARD. But I’ll keep trying! I’ve been able to go some amazing places and see amazing things because I am able to make and sell unique jewelry! I plan to keep trying! What motivates you when you? When you are your own boss, how do you get things done and not get bogged down?
Being self-employed as an artist or small business owner requires a unique blend of passion and resilience. From my personal experience, one of the biggest challenges is managing your time and finances without the safety nets of sick days or paid vacations. Each day demands self-discipline, especially when income can be unpredictable. What keeps me going is the ability to merge creativity with entrepreneurship. Creating unique jewelry pieces has given me not only a source of income but also opportunities to travel and meet amazing people. This freedom, however, comes with the responsibility of constantly marketing my work, balancing production with business tasks, and staying motivated even during slow periods. To avoid burnout, I recommend setting clear daily goals and maintaining a flexible routine that allows for breaks and inspiration time. Networking with other artists and entrepreneurs can provide emotional support and new ideas. Additionally, leveraging social media and online marketplaces has been essential in expanding my reach. Ultimately, the rewards of being your own boss—expressing your creativity, setting your own schedule, and enjoying the satisfaction of building something from the ground up—outweigh the hardships. Embrace the challenges, stay persistent, and remember why you started. What strategies help you stay motivated when running your own business?
