Unlike previous generations, who had limited channels and controlled viewing times, today's youth have access to thousands of channels and nonstop access to devices like smartphones. This has created an ‘always-on’ environment where young people are constantly exposed to a mix of positive and negative influences. I remember when we used to have just one or two TV channels, and the content was carefully regulated. Now, it’s common for young people to be on their phones late into the night, browsing websites and social media platforms that are not always appropriate or safe. This unrestricted access contributes to confusion about values and identity, making it harder for parents and mentors to guide them effectively. Moreover, the atmosphere surrounding many young people is often described as ‘closed’ or ‘restricted’ in terms of open communication. When conversations about feelings, struggles, or doubts are absent, it leaves room for misunderstanding and isolation. I have seen that when parental attention and genuine interest are lacking, young people tend to seek acceptance and validation elsewhere, sometimes in harmful ways. The culture of constant connectivity can sometimes lead to a loss of focus on spiritual and moral foundations that were integral in the past. It’s essential to create spaces where young women feel valued, heard, and understood without judgment or conditions. Encouraging open dialogues, setting healthy boundaries with media use, and reinforcing community values can help address the issues mentioned by Fr. Youssef Dawood. In my experience, fostering an environment of unconditional love and attention is key. When a young person knows that someone truly cares about their well-being, it builds resilience against negative external influences. While the challenges are complex and multi-faceted, a collective effort from family, faith communities, and society can make a profound difference in guiding our daughters toward a healthy and fulfilling future.
