Between Breaths

A. Duncan

I read Between Breaths as part of a Mother’s Day Read-a-thon on Galatea Stories App. This story hit very close to my heart. As a 40+ year old woman it’s nice when I can read a story that I can actually step into. Along with age, Arabella’s medical issues resonated with me as well, being someone that lives with chronic pain, someone who was told by a doctor that I needed to lose weight and when I told him everything I was doing to lose said weight told me that it would be much harder because I was old. So reading her experiences definitely touched a piece of my heart. I’m also single. A. Duncan masterfully crafted realistic characters in a world taken from reality for a lot of women. The pacing was great in a way that the timeline accelerated without feeling rushed and kept the story from lagging. And the spicy is top notch *wink*

Like Arabella, many women over 40 face not only the physical hurdles of health issues but also the emotional weight of being underestimated by medical professionals. It’s empowering to see a character navigate these struggles with such authenticity. I particularly appreciated how the story doesn't shy away from the frustration of dealing with doctor's dismissals, reflecting a reality many of us know all too well. The pacing of the narrative felt natural, allowing me to connect deeply with the characters while keeping me engaged throughout. The way A. Duncan captures the nuances of single life, health concerns, and self-acceptance made the story feel like a mirror to everyday experiences. Moreover, the inclusion of tasteful romance added a refreshing balance, reminding readers that life between breaths—those quiet, challenging moments—still holds space for connection and joy. For anyone managing chronic pain or navigating the complexities of middle age, 'Between Breaths' serves as a reminder that we are not alone in our journeys. It highlights the importance of empathy, self-care, and resilience. I found myself reflecting on my own health battles and feeling inspired to keep pushing forward despite setbacks. This story is a valuable read for anyone who values genuine, emotionally rich storytelling that speaks to real-life struggles and triumphs.
