Modifying a 2005 Toyota 4Runner, especially with a substantial lift like a 6-inch suspension, is a project that many off-road enthusiasts dream about but few undertake due to the lack of off-the-shelf kits for this specific height. From my experience, tackling such a build requires careful planning and some custom fabrication to ensure both performance and safety. When selecting a lift this high, it's important to consider not just the physical components like shocks, springs, and control arms, but also potential issues with alignment and driveline angles that can affect handling and reliability. For the 4Runner, custom longer brake lines and reinforced sway bar links often become necessary upgrades. Downsizing to 20-inch wheels with 35-inch tires is a great match for that lift height, providing aggressive off-road capability while maintaining on-road drivability. In my build, choosing tires with a robust sidewall and tread pattern suited to mixed terrain helped balance grip and comfort. However, fitting 35-inch tires may require trimming of fender liners or modifying the wheel wells to prevent rubbing during suspension travel or steering. Documenting progress with photos and notes not only helps track the build but also serves the off-road community by sharing insights and challenges encountered along the way. Constantly inspecting the suspension and drivetrain components during the first few hundred miles after the lift is crucial to catching any unexpected issues early. Overall, taking on a bigger build like this 2005 Toyota 4Runner transformation is rewarding and pushes vehicle capabilities to new limits. If you’re considering such upgrades, don’t shy away from custom solutions and be prepared for a project that’s both technical and fun. Engaging with communities such as #4runnermafia and specialist shops can provide invaluable support and advice during your build journey.
