Having spent several mornings by the rivers and lakes of Jiangsu, I’ve had the chance to observe cormorants in their natural environment. These birds are not only remarkable for their fishing skills but also for the way they interact within their habitats. Typically, cormorants use cooperative fishing methods, where a group works together to herd fish into shallow waters. Watching their diving and resurfacing patterns offers a fascinating glimpse into instinctual teamwork. Besides their behavior, the habitats where cormorants thrive are equally interesting. They prefer clean freshwater bodies such as lakes and slow-flowing rivers lined with ample vegetation, which provides both food and nesting sites. Over time, changes in local water quality and human activity have affected their population dynamics, making conservation awareness critical. For those interested in birdwatching, timing a visit around early morning or late afternoon can be rewarding, as these are peak feeding times. Bringing binoculars and a camera can enhance the experience of capturing these elegant birds as they glide gracefully above the water or perch on branches drying their wings. Overall, Jiangsu’s cormorants offer a unique window into the region’s biodiversity and the delicate balance of freshwater ecosystems.
