Having spent some time observing the cormorants in Jiangsu, I’ve come to appreciate not only their distinctive appearance but also their incredible fishing skills. These birds, often seen perched along riverbanks and lakesides, use their sharp beaks and excellent diving abilities to catch fish, playing a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats. What fascinates me most is their symbiotic relationship with local fishermen, especially the traditional practice of cormorant fishing. Fishermen train these birds to catch fish and return to the boat, making it a unique cultural heritage that showcases human-animal cooperation. Watching the cormorants dive gracefully underwater and emerge with a fish in their beaks is truly a remarkable sight. Beyond their interaction with humans, cormorants contribute to the biodiversity in Jiangsu by controlling fish populations, which helps prevent overpopulation and supports the health of aquatic ecosystems. Their presence indicates a relatively healthy environment since these birds require clean water and abundant fish to thrive. For nature enthusiasts and photographers, Jiangsu provides numerous opportunities to observe these birds in their natural surroundings. Visiting early in the morning or late afternoon increases your chances of witnessing their fishing behavior. Overall, understanding and appreciating the cormorants of Jiangsu enriches our knowledge of local wildlife and highlights the importance of conserving their natural habitats for future generations.
