Blanket Progress

Today felt like the perfect mix of cozy and productive. I’ve been visiting family for the holiday, and in between catching up with everyone, I managed to complete a section of the blanket I’ve been working on with my knitting loom. There’s something so satisfying about the gentle rhythm of wrapping the pegs and pulling the yarn through—it’s helped me self-regulate, especially with the whirlwind of conversation from all my cousins.

I set myself up in the living room, where the warm glow of holiday lights added to the charm. It felt grounding, being surrounded by the joyful buzz of activity while my hands worked through the familiar motions of knitting.

It’s not perfect—there’s a stitch or two that’s a little uneven—but it’s mine. Each loop of yarn feels like a little memory stitched into the fabric.

As I put the loom down in the drive home, I couldn’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for family, for the space to unwind, and for the simple joys of creating something with my hands.

My recent 'Blanket Progress' project, using my trusty green circular knitting loom and some vibrant Caron Chunky Cakes yarn, has been such a grounding experience, especially during a busy family holiday. It's truly amazing how a simple craft can transform into a source of comfort and productivity. Speaking of the yarn, if you're curious about what makes a project like this so satisfying, let me tell you about Yarnspirations Caron Chunky Cakes. This yarn is an absolute dream for blanket making! Its chunky weight means your projects grow incredibly fast, which is super encouraging, especially for beginners or when you want quick results. Plus, the self-striping nature of the yarn does all the color work for you – like the lovely green, blue, red, orange, and yellow stripes forming on my knitted blanket. It creates a beautiful, colorful, striped knitted blanket without needing to change skeins constantly. I find it so soft and cozy, perfect for snuggling up. If you're using a knitting loom like I am, its thickness is ideal for creating a plush, substantial fabric that feels wonderfully warm. Beyond just the yarn, finding inspiration for your blanket designs can be half the fun! While my current project is a simple striped design, there are so many ways to infuse personality into your handmade blankets. If you're looking for unique aesthetics, whether it's a rustic, modern, or even a themed blanket, consider how different color palettes and patterns can tell a story. For example, you might be drawn to bold, geometric shapes or a specific color scheme inspired by a favorite show or piece of art. Whether you're a knitter or a crocheter, experimenting with textures – like cables, bobbles, or even just alternating simple stitches – can dramatically change the look and feel of your blanket. The joy comes from letting your creativity flow and making something truly unique to you. Don't be afraid to try different combinations; sometimes the most unexpected choices lead to the most cherished pieces. For anyone thinking of starting their own blanket project, especially with chunky yarn, here are a few practical tips. Make sure your knitting loom has pegs spaced far enough apart to accommodate the thickness of the yarn without being too tight, or if you're using knitting needles, opt for a larger size. Always do a small swatch to check your tension and ensure you like the fabric your chosen tools create. When your blanket is finished, a gentle wash and block can really help define the stitches and give it a professional finish. And remember, handmade items are meant to be loved! Don't stress too much about perfection; those little uneven stitches, like the ones in my blanket, are part of its unique charm and tell the story of its creation. Happy crafting!
