Visiting Boonton Day 2018 was a remarkable experience, especially for those like me who appreciate the craftsmanship and history behind vintage fire trucks. The 1958 Mack B Model pumper on display truly stood out—not just as a vehicle, but as a testament to firefighting technology of its era. This Mack fire truck, originally costing $25,000 in 1958 (equivalent to over $218,000 today), was equipped with a 750 gallons per minute 2-stage HALE pump and a powerful 6-cylinder gasoline engine with dual ignition. Its water tank held 500 gallons, weighing about 4,250 pounds, and it featured a 35-foot extension ladder. Driving this behemoth required skill; it had a 5-speed standard transmission, drum and air-assisted brakes, and steering without power assist, making maneuvering a true test of the driver's expertise. What fascinated me most was how these trucks were maintained and operated in the past, with no cab heater and air-powered windshield wipers.
