Halloween Party (💥x🫵🏼) Oneshot
The common room was transformed, draped in spiderwebs and fake skeletons, with pumpkin lights casting an eerie glow over the dancing students. And there, dressed as an unlikely pirate, was Bakugou, looking more annoyed than usual as he stood by the snack table, picking at the edge of a skull-shaped cookie.
He hated parties, always have and always will. It was never his thing to be around people, noise, especially late when he could be studying or sleeping. But, he wouldn't hear the end of it if "Shitty Hair" or "Dunce Face" didn't see him around that night, and get bugged about it the next day so he reluctantly put on a costume he found in a box from somewhere and shoved it on. It ended up being some stupid pirate costume of all things.
He scanned the room, half-interested, half-annoyed by the overly enthusiastic costumes around him. Midoriya was a knight in shining armor (of course), Ashido was a pink-horned demon (she had to be, considering she just covered her own horns), and Kaminari, always one for drama, was dressed as a vampire, scaring people left and right.
Bakugou rolled his eyes. Halloween, to him, was just a dumb excuse to act ridiculous. But then his eyes fell on someone else entering the room-someone who, for a split second, made him do a double-take.
There you were, dressed as a mermaid.
Your costume was simple but sparkly. It was shimmering with an iridescent sequin tail skirt that glows with shades of blue, green, and purple, topped with a shell-inspired bralette adorned with pearls and glitter. You wore a skin color shirt underneath since it was chillier outside. On your ears, you wore shell earrings, a wave necklace that rested on your chest, face gems that seemed to peel off after a couple hours of soft makeup, and a hint of blue body glitter for the magical underwater look. And as if that wasn't enough to catch his attention, you had a little smirk on your face as you walked over to the snack table, catching Bakugou's stare.
You tilted your head, noticing him watching you.
"Oh, I didn't know pirates were this fond of sweets." You teased, nodding toward his hand, which still held the cookie.
He glared, but there was something else in his eyes-something that looked like surprise, almost interest. "Not interested in the sweets. Just...watching the idiots make fools of themselves."
You shrugged, reaching for a cookie shaped like a bat. "And yet, here you are, dressed up like the rest of us," you smirked. "I'd say that means you're here for the fun, too."
"Tch." He scoffed but didn't argue. You had him there, though he'd never admit it.
The two of you stood in silence for a moment, the sounds of the party bustling around you. You were used to Bakugou's rough edges by now, and that made these quiet moments where he was just himself all the more enjoyable. That's when Kaminari and Ashido swooped in, grinning with excitement.
"Bakugou! (Y/n)!" Ashido beamed, her eyes lighting up with mischief. "There's a couples' costume contest going on, and guess what? You two would make the perfect pirate and mermaid combo!"
Bakugou's expression soured immediately. "No way," he snapped, practically snarling at the suggestion.
You giggled softly, patting his shoulder lightly. "Relax, Bakugou. It's just for fun, right?" You turned to Ashido, a playful look in your eyes. "But I think we'd be a strong contender if we tried."
Bakugou narrowed his eyes at you, looking irritated that you agreed to something without letting him decide. Even though he was gonna say no anyways. "You actually wanna go along with these idiots?"
"Well..." You raised an eyebrow, shrugging lightly. "Depends. Would you be up for it, oh mighty pirate?"
He rolled his eyes but found himself smirking, just a little. It had been a while since anyone matched his energy like you did. And you were damn good at it every single time. "Fine. If we're doing this, we're winning. Got it?"
You grinned, holding out your hand to shake on it. "Deal."
The contest started as Aoyama, dressed as a glittering phantom, announced that couples would have to dress to impress everyone on the dance floor. And of course, leave it to Bakugou to turn a costume contest into a challenge he had to win. You both made your way to the dance floor, facing each other. The music started, and for a moment, Bakugou hesitated. But you took his hand, guiding him with an unexpected ease that surprised both of you.
"Follow my lead, tough guy," you whispered, your smile widening as you began to move.
It wasn't a graceful waltz, not with the pounding beat and Bakugou's rough edges, but it was surprisingly fun. He found himself keeping up with you, matching your playful energy, soft giggles, and excited eyes with his own fierce confidence. You twirled, and he caught you, and for a moment, the world seemed to slow down as he looked at you, the fake candlelight flickering against your mischievous grin.
"See?" You teased. "You're not half-bad at this."
He scoffed, though a faint pink dusted his cheeks. "Don't get used to it," he muttered, though his grip on your hand tightened just a little.
The crowd cheered, and you pulled Bakugou in for a bow, which he grumbled about but went along with. Everyone else had their turn, Kirishima with Sero, Uraraka and Ashido, Midoriya and Todoroki, Kaminari and Jirou... the contest went on with everyone joking at everyone's performances.
As if by some small miracle, you both ended up winning the contest, Aoyama announcing you as the "Ultimate Halloween Duo." It was corny and ridiculous, but for once, Bakugou didn't care. He fucking won. He knew he would.
After the party, as the two of you slipped away from the crowd and out onto the quieter, dimly lit path leading back to the dorms, you couldn't help but notice that Bakugou's expression had softened slightly.
"Didn't know you'd be so competitive over something like this," you remarked, half-joking.
He shrugged, glancing away. "Told you we were gonna win. No point in doing it if you're not gonna win."
You both fell into silence, the cool October air making your breath visible as you exhaled. Eventually, he spoke up, his voice gruff but softer than usual.
"Costume suits you, by the way," he mumbled, looking anywhere but at you.
You laughed softly, surprised by the compliment. "Thanks, Bakugou." You paused, then added, "You make a pretty good pirate, too."
He rolled his eyes, but there was a small, almost shy smirk on his face.
As you both reached the entrance to the dorms once again, you felt a bit of reluctance to let the night end. You didn't want it to end. "We make a pretty good damn team," you offered, hoping he'd pick up on your attempt to extend the moment.
He stopped, his gaze meeting yours for a beat longer than usual. "Yeah, we do," he admitted, and for the first time tonight, he didn't sound defensive.
The two of you lingered for a moment, standing close enough that the faint smell of the sweets and fall air surrounded you. Just as you turned to head inside, he reached out, gently grabbing your hand. It was warm.
"Oi, (Y/n)," he muttered, his voice low and a little unsure.
You looked back, surprised. "Yeah?" Your voice was soft and you waited for him to keep going. You wanted him to keep going.
His grip on your hand tightened just slightly. "Let's...team up next time, too." He glanced away, clearly embarrassed but determined to get the words out. "Not just for some dumb contest. For anything. Got it?"
You couldn't help the smile that spread across your face. "Got it," you replied softly.
Bakugou released your hand slowly, almost reluctantly, shoving both hands into his pockets and looking away, clearly a little unsure of himself. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, and for a second, it looked like he might say something else. But instead, he just clenched his jaw, the faintest trace of a blush on his cheeks, and turned back to the path leading toward the dorms.
You walked together in silence, the sounds of the Halloween party behind you fading as you stepped further into the quiet of the night. Your mind replayed his words over and over, the faint thrill still buzzing in your chest. "Not just for some dumb contest"-the meaning wasn't lost on you, and each time you thought of it, the little smile on your face grew.
When you reached the front steps of the dorms, Bakugou stopped, pausing before the door. "So, uh..." he began, glancing away before forcing himself to meet your gaze. "What're you up to after all this?" He cleared his throat, as if he'd accidentally let the question slip.
You tilted your head, feigning confusion but enjoying the rare moment of Bakugou looking vulnerable. "Well, I was just going to head up to my room and wind down. Why? What did you have in mind?"
His eyes flicked up to meet yours, the corners of his mouth twitching as he tried not to smirk. "Could...you know, hang out or something. Talk about the contest. Whatever."
The invitation caught you by surprise, but you tried to play it cool, without sounding too eager to be around him more. "So you do think we were a pretty good team," you teased, nudging his arm.
He scoffed, rolling his eyes, but didn't deny it. "Guess it wasn't completely terrible," he muttered, a hint of a smile betraying him.
"Alright, then," you said, keeping your voice casual though you felt a giddy thrill at the idea. "Your room or mine?"
The question made him pause, and for a moment, you thought he might just back out altogether. But instead, he straightened up, his usual confidence returning as he gestured toward the hallway. "Yours. Less chance of getting interrupted by those idiots when they come back from 2-B's dorms."
You both made your way upstairs, the dorms eerily quiet now that most of the students were still at the other class's dorms for the party. Once you reached your room, you opened the door, letting Bakugou step inside. He looked around, taking in the cozy details-photos, knick-knacks, a string of fairy lights along the wall. It was a stark contrast to the bare essentials in his own room.
"Didn't take you for someone who liked things this...sparkly," he remarked, eyeing the lights with mild disdain. Cozy.
You laughed, shutting the door behind you. "Oh, come on Bakugou. You can't tell me it doesn't look a little better than your cave of a room."
He shrugged, but you could tell he wasn't actually as bothered as he pretended to be. With a sigh, he flopped onto the chair by your desk, arms crossed and leaning back as he watched you settle onto your bed.
"So," he said, crossing his arms with a hint of a smirk. "How'd you think we did back there?"
You leaned back on your hands, a playful grin on your face. "Well, we did win. I'd say we made a pretty killer team."
He rolled his eyes but didn't argue, his gaze lingering on you for a moment. His usual harshness softened as he let his guard down, his eyes showing a spark of something that made your heart skip a beat or two. "Just so you know," he said after a beat, "I don't say stuff like this often. About teaming up, I mean. So don't go running your mouth about it."
You chuckled, nodding. "Your secret's safe with me, Bakugou. But..." you paused, feeling a bit bolder as you looked back at him. "I wouldn't mind teaming up with you again-contest or no contest."
He gave you a long look, his eyes searching yours as if he was weighing whether or not to believe you. Finally, he gave a small, almost imperceptible nod.
"Good," he muttered, his voice softening. "Because neither would I."
A silence settled between you, comfortable and electric at the same time. The faint sounds of the Halloween party drifted up from the common room below, but for once, neither of you felt like you were missing out. Just being here together was enough.
Finally, you broke the silence, your voice barely more than a whisper. "Happy Halloween, Bakugou."
A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he nodded. "Yeah. Happy Halloween, mermaid."
And for the first time all night, you saw him smile.
A real smile.
One just for you.
