I def only signed up for the half-marathons to give me a reason to shop. Get your feet scanned! It was both eye-opening and a bit disappointing (I found out I basically have perfect feet so nearly all runnig shoes would work for me (I was hoping a scan would narrow my options so I spend less money, not broaden them)). #running #runtok #runningcommunity #runnergirl #fyp
Okay, so my initial article was a bit cheeky about shopping, but seriously, prepping for a half-marathon is a journey that definitely benefits from the right gear! Since my foot scan didn't narrow down my shoe choices as much as I hoped, it actually opened my eyes to the incredible variety out there, proving that sometimes, perfect feet just mean more options to explore! Let's talk shoes first. I mentioned the Nike Vaporfly 4 and the Fresh Foam X 1080v14. These are both fantastic, but for different reasons. The Vaporfly are my race-day shoes – they're incredibly light and responsive, really giving you that extra spring in your step. But you wouldn't want to do all your training runs in them; that's where a workhorse like the Fresh Foam X 1080v14 comes in. It's cushioned and supportive for those long, slow miles, helping to reduce impact and keep your legs fresh. I've learned that having a rotation of shoes is key for longevity and performance, tailoring each pair to a specific workout! Then there's fueling. I stocked up on so many energy gels and chews, and for good reason. Practicing your nutrition strategy during training is just as important as your mileage. Different brands have different textures and flavors, so it's all about finding what works for your stomach on the run. I always make sure to try them out on my long runs, not just on race day, to avoid any unpleasant surprises! Hydration is equally critical – don't forget your electrolytes! Recovery is non-negotiable, and my Hyperice massager is a lifesaver. While it might seem like an indulgence, consistent massage helps with muscle soreness and flexibility, and I truly believe it's been crucial in keeping injuries at bay. Stretching, foam rolling, and even just taking active recovery days are all part of the puzzle. Listening to your body is perhaps the most important recovery tool of all. And for tunes? My Shokz OPENRUN PRO bone conduction headphones are a game-changer for outdoor running. They sit outside your ears, so you can still hear traffic and your surroundings, which is super important for safety, especially when running alone or in urban areas. Plus, the sound quality is surprisingly good, and they're comfortable for hours, even with sunglasses. Don't even get me started on cold-weather running clothes and socks! Layering is everything. I invest in good moisture-wicking base layers, a breathable mid-layer, and a wind/water-resistant outer shell. For socks, I swear by both cushioned and compression socks. The cushioned ones prevent blisters on long runs, and the compression ones help with circulation and recovery afterwards. It's amazing how much difference quality socks make – happy feet, happy runner! And a fun splurge? Those Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. While I originally got them for my husband, I'm totally planning to use them for hands-free video snippets of my runs and adventures. Imagine capturing those scenic routes without breaking stride! Finally, tracking my progress keeps me motivated. I'm still deciding between Strava and Runna, but having an app to log my runs, track my pace, and connect with other runners is invaluable. It turns each run into a data point, helping me see progress and set new goals for that PR-filled and injury-free year ahead. Investing in yourself and your running journey truly pays off!
