Review of my Canon R10 camera 📷

I've had the R10 for almost two years now, and it is one of my best purchases to date. However, there are also a few things I would keep in mind if you consider picking up this camera.

First let's look at the positives:

High resolution

- The R10 comes with a 24MP ASP-C sensor, which gives extremely clear images when shot right. This also means you have more freedom with cropping and enlarging when editing.

Compact design

- Since this is a mirrorless camera, it is way more compact than a traditional DSLR camera, meaning it’s lightweight to use and easy to bring with you.

Fast and smart autofocus

- The R10 has a very fast and accurate autofocus system with multiple smart functions for tracking and subject recognition. You can also shoot continuously up to 23fps.

Good video quality

- You can shoot up to 4K 60fps with this camera, which is especially ideal for short-form content.

Movable touch screen

- The R10 comes with a 3 inch flip-/swivel screen that can aid with shooting video, vlogging or creative angles.

And then to some more negative things:

Battery life

- To be honest the battery life is not really impressive, especially if you are shooting video. I always have to carry extra batteries with me in case it dies while shooting.

Lens ecosystem

- Canon is not known for having the widest range of lenses, but this has not been an issue for me (yet) personally, as I stick with a couple basic lenses.

No IBIS

- The R10 does not have built in image stabilization, and relies on the stabilization from the lenses you use. I find the lens stabilization to work for my uses, but I would opt for a camera with IBIS next time.

Overheating

- When shooting video, especially 4K, the camera can be quick to overheat. I mostly notice this when shooting longer videos, and solve it by turning off the camera between shots.

... Read moreThe original article gives a fantastic overview of the Canon R10, but after almost two years of using this Canon EOS R10 mirrorless camera, I've picked up a few extra tips and tricks that might help you maximize its potential or navigate its quirks! Getting the Most Out of Video & Vlogging with the R10 Okay, so you've heard the R10 can do 4K 60fps – and it's awesome for short-form content! But for vlogging, I've found a few things really make a difference. First, that movable touch screen is a lifesaver for framing yourself. I usually shoot in 4K 30fps for a more cinematic look and to manage overheating a bit better. My go-to video settings often involve keeping the ISO low and using a relatively fast shutter speed (double your frame rate, so 1/60th for 30fps) to get that smooth motion blur. For audio, since the R10 doesn't have an amazing internal mic, investing in a small external shotgun mic changed my vlogs completely. It just slots into the hot shoe and connects to the mic input. It's a game-changer for clear audio, especially if you're talking directly to the camera and aiming for that cinematic video feel. Mastering Autofocus Tracking The fast autofocus of the R10 truly shines. For tracking, I've had incredible success with the eye-detection AF, especially for portraits or when people are moving. It just locks on! If you're photographing pets or fast-moving subjects, setting it to 'Animal Tracking' or 'Vehicle Tracking' (if applicable in updated firmware) and using continuous AF (Servo AF) will keep your subject sharp even if they're running around. It’s definitely one of the R10’s strongest positive features. I love how intuitive it is – just tap on the screen where you want to focus, and it usually nails it. Tips for Stunning Portrait Photography For portrait photography with the Canon R10, even without a huge lens ecosystem, you can get stunning results. I often use a prime lens (like a 50mm f/1.8 if you can get one adapted, or the kit lens at its widest aperture) to get that beautiful background blur. Focusing on the eyes with the R10's eye-detection AF is key. The 24MP high resolution ASP-C sensor gives you plenty of detail, so don't be afraid to crop slightly in post-production if needed. Experiment with different lighting – natural light near a window works wonders, and the compact design of the camera makes it easy to move around and find the best angles. My Workarounds for the 'Negative Aspects' Let's talk about those 'negative aspects' – they're real, but manageable! The battery life is probably my biggest gripe. I always carry at least two spare batteries, especially if I'm shooting video or out for a full day. It's not ideal, but it's become part of my routine. For the lack of in-body image stabilization (IBIS), I've learned to rely on lens stabilization where available, or just keeping my shutter speed faster when handheld. For video, a small gimbal can totally transform your footage, making up for the camera's lack of IBIS. And overheating issues for 4K video? I've found shooting in shorter bursts helps, or if I'm doing a longer take, I'll turn it off between takes to let it cool down. It's a minor inconvenience, but knowing about it helps you plan. Getting Familiar with the R10 Controls & Ergonomics Holding the R10, it feels really comfortable in hand despite its compact design. The controls are intuitive once you get used to them. I've customized a few buttons to quickly access my most used settings like ISO or exposure compensation. Don't be afraid to dive into the custom menus to set it up exactly how you like; it makes a huge difference in workflow. The front view of the camera really highlights its simplicity and accessibility.

I’ve only had my R10 for a few months and love it! I would say you nailed it with the pros and cons 👍🏾. I bought an EF adapter so I can still use the lenses. It’s a cheaper alternative that I’m ok with since I’m still learning 😅

- I bought this camera to try out a mirrorless camera before spending thousands of dollars. Canon just came out with this camera last year in May. On Amazon you can get the whole bundle for 400-600$, and that comes with all you need to start off. - It does come with a lens, BUT it sucks. It’s an

I knew about this older EF lens for a while now. It’s very compact and tiny. The adapter is actually bigger than the lens itself! At a 2.8 aperture it has pretty good shallow depth of field and decent low light capabilities. It’s not the sharpest lens in the world, but it gets the job done! #cheap
