... Read moreOkay, so you're looking for those epic, 'rugged' poses for men, right? I totally get it – it’s about capturing that confident, authentic, and slightly edgy vibe that makes a photo truly stand out. From my latest session, I picked up some amazing tips to help you or the guys you're shooting nail that look, whether it's for a solo shoot or with a partner!
First off, let's talk about the setting and props. As you can see from our recent shoot, a motorcycle is an absolute game-changer for that rugged feel. Leaning against it, sitting on it, or even just having it in the background instantly adds a cool, adventurous layer. But don't limit yourself! Open fields, old brick walls, industrial areas, or even just a natural, slightly unkempt patch of grass can work wonders. The key is to find environments that feel a bit raw, authentic, and unfussy, letting the subject’s personality shine through.
Now for the poses themselves. For standing shots, encourage a relaxed stance – think hands casually in pockets, one hand resting on a belt loop, or a slight lean against a wall or the motorcycle. It’s about looking comfortable and in control, not stiff. A classic 'staring off into the distance' look with a thoughtful or intense expression always works. For sitting, try perching on a low wall, a tree stump, or that awesome motorcycle. Slouch a little, spread the legs slightly – it's about owning the space and exuding confidence. And if you or your subject have tattoos, like the amazing art we captured, absolutely show them off! Resting an arm to highlight sleeve art, or a leg pose to showcase ink can add so much character and a truly personal, rugged touch to the photos.
Expressions and attitude are crucial for 'rugged.' It’s not always about smiling! Think strong jawlines, slightly narrowed eyes, a confident smirk, or a deep, contemplative gaze. Confidence is key! If feeling a bit awkward, try focusing on a distant point, or even just closing your eyes for a moment to get into a relaxed headspace before opening them for that intense shot. This natural approach really makes the image powerful.
What if you're shooting with a partner, like in some of my favorite shots? The 'rugged' feel can totally extend to couple poses too! Have him stand tall, perhaps with his arm around her, or both of you facing each other, embracing with a strong, protective feel. Even simply holding hands with intertwined arms, showcasing both your tattoos, can convey a powerful connection with that rugged edge. It’s about being grounded and present together, rather than overly cutesy.
Don't forget about natural light! Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) is magical for achieving that warm, dramatic glow. The sunlight filtering through can create incredible depth and highlight textures, making those rugged elements pop even more. Lastly, clothing plays a huge role. Think denim, leather jackets, natural fabrics, and darker tones. Avoid anything too fussy or flashy. A simple t-shirt, jeans, and some boots can be incredibly effective for conveying that rugged aesthetic. Give these tips a try for your next photoshoot!
