... Read moreLiving with complex PTSD (CPTSD) from childhood trauma can profoundly affect how we process memories and emotions. One of the ways many cope is through dissociation, which is like a mental escape to survive overwhelming experiences. I’ve found that dissociating, while protective at the time, can unexpectedly influence physical health, including the potential for autoimmune issues, which is something not often discussed. From personal experience, dissociating makes reconnecting with suppressed memories challenging but also necessary for healing. Therapy approaches such as trauma-informed cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and grounding techniques have been helpful. Grounding exercises, like focusing on the five senses or deep breathing, assist in staying present and gradually reducing the need to dissociate. Understanding the roots of narcissistic abuse, especially from narcissistic parents, helps illuminate patterns of self-worth and triggers that may activate dissociative responses. Creating safe, supportive networks and practicing self-compassion are key steps toward recovery. It's important to raise awareness about the physical links between CPTSD, dissociation, and autoimmune diseases because this helps provide a more holistic approach to treatment. If you find yourself dissociating frequently, consider reaching out to mental health professionals who specialize in trauma and autoimmune health. Remember, healing is a journey—not a linear path, but one filled with opportunities to reclaim your story and rebuild your life with strength and resilience.
