It just fell short… 😔

The Favorites by Layne Fargo ⛸️

✨ 3.5/5 stars ✨

I’m so glad I chose to listen to the audiobook instead of just reading the physical book. The cast of narrators really added to the experience (audiobook performance is a 5/5 stars). But this story is full of drama and back and forth. Heath and Kat frustrated me so many times in this book, and the ending was not as satisfying as I was hoping for. It was a fun read, but just missed the mark for me.

... Read moreI recently finished 'The Favorites' by Layne Fargo, and while my initial review gave it 3.5/5 stars, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why it was a fun read but ultimately fell short for me. For those wondering 'what genre is The Favorites by Layne Fargo,' I'd categorize it as a dark academic thriller with strong psychological elements. It delves into the intense, often toxic, relationships within the cutthroat world of competitive figure skating, which is a unique and intriguing setting. Before even diving into the story, the book cover itself is quite striking. It features golden text and a blurred image of two figures, immediately hinting at the central dynamic. That quote, 'TO THE WORLD, THEY WERE A SCANDAL TO EACH OTHER, AN OBSESSION,' perfectly encapsulates the intense, almost obsessive relationship between the main characters, drawing you into their world of competitive figure skating drama from the very first glance. It really sets the tone for the dark and twisted narrative within. My decision to listen to 'The Favorites' as an audiobook was definitely a great one – something I'd highly recommend! The original review briefly mentioned the 5/5 performance, and I can't stress enough how much the cast of narrators elevated the story. Their distinct voices brought Heath and Kat, and the rest of the cast, to life in a way reading the physical book might not have. The narration truly captured the tension, the internal monologues, and the dramatic confrontations, making the 'back and forth' feel even more immediate and impactful. It felt like I was right there, eavesdropping on their intense world, which made the frustrating parts more bearable. Regarding the overall 'the favorites layne fargo review,' the core of the story revolves around the intense rivalry and complicated bond between two figure skaters. As I mentioned, Heath and Kat truly frustrated me. Their push-and-pull dynamic, the constant mind games, and their inability to communicate effectively created a cycle of drama that, while engaging at times, also became a bit exhausting. Their ambition and rivalry fueled some truly suspenseful moments, but I often found myself wanting to shake them both. The story explores themes of obsession, ambition, and the murky lines between love and hate in a high-stakes environment. And finally, the ending. The original review noted it 'just missed the mark,' and I completely agree. After all the build-up and the intense psychological drama, I was hoping for a more definitive or impactful conclusion. It felt a little rushed, leaving some threads untied and not quite delivering the satisfying punch I'd anticipated for such a tumultuous journey. It wasn't bad, but it didn't provide the catharsis I was looking for after investing so much in their story. Despite my reservations about the ending and the characters' frustrating dynamic, if you're a fan of dark academia, psychological thrillers, or stories about intense female rivalries in unique settings, 'The Favorites' might still be a compelling read for you. Especially if you enjoy a story where characters are deeply flawed and the drama is always at an 11. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions and perhaps consider the audiobook for the best experience!
