Hoping book 2 is better.

Nero by SJ Tilly

✨ 2.5/5 stars ✨

Plot? Barely there. Spice? Very present and not tropes I like so it was a rough read for me. Definitely check trigger warnings before diving in. But if you like dark mafia romance - go for it! I’ll give book 2 a try, simply because I want to get to know some of the side characters (King and his sister) a bit better. And hoping for a stronger and less dependent FMC in the following books.

1/30 Edited to

... Read moreHaving read Nero by S.J. Tilly, I understand the mixed feelings about the book’s pacing and plot. The story leans heavily on steamy, dark romance elements rather than a fully developed narrative, which can make it feel unbalanced for some readers. When diving into dark mafia romance, it’s important to be prepared for intense themes and sometimes problematic tropes, so checking trigger warnings is a smart step before starting. One aspect I found intriguing was the presence of side characters like King and his sister, whose stories and personalities add some depth beyond the main plot. This kind of character exploration often becomes the highlight in a series, especially when the main storyline feels less engaging. It’s understandable to hope for a stronger and more independent female main character (FMC) in the sequels, as this can greatly enhance the dynamic and reader connection. What I appreciate about books like Nero is their ability to deliver edgy, passionate romance that caters to fans of the dark romance and mafia genre. If you enjoy reading about complex, sometimes morally ambiguous characters and high-stakes relationships, this book could be a compelling pick despite its flaws. Trying book 2 makes sense for readers invested in the series’ world and curious about character growth. For anyone considering this read, I would suggest keeping expectations in check regarding plot depth and focusing on the romantic and suspenseful tone. If you proceed to book 2, watch for how the author develops the FMC and other key characters, as well as how the story’s tension evolves. This can often make or break a series, especially in genres that thrive on character intensity and emotional drama. Overall, Nero offers an intense, spicy take on mafia romance but may not satisfy readers looking for a robust plot or traditional romance arcs. It’s a niche pick, best suited for those who enjoy the genre’s darker and more provocative side.
