Witches and pirates = perfect feminine rage
Salt & Sorcery duology - book 1
✨ 4/5 stars ✨
This was a fun read! I loved Alys and her group of pirate witches on The Sea Witch, as they sail the Caribbean to find a fail-safe to free the sea monsters that the Royal Navy as enslaved to terrorizes pirates and inflict absolute control of the seas. The feminine rage in this book was amazing! I also loved the character development of Ben as he realizes that actual state of the world and questions his place in the Royal Navy as he learns they’re not as perfect and grand as he once thought. The ending definitely leaves you wanting book two asap! I received this book as an eARC on NetGalley. Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and author for this opportunity. I enjoyed this book so much I bought my own physical copy!

Reading 'The Sea Witch' by Eva Leigh was an immersive experience, blending the allure of pirate adventures with the mystical world of witches. What stood out to me most was how the novel captured the essence of feminine rage—not just as anger but as a powerful force driving Alys and her crew to challenge oppression and strive for freedom. The Caribbean setting, rich with dangers from both the natural world and the Royal Navy's tyranny, added layers of tension that kept me hooked. One aspect that resonated deeply was the character development, particularly of Ben, a Royal Navy officer who begins to question his allegiance as he uncovers the harsh realities behind the navy's dominance. This internal conflict made the story more nuanced and relatable, showing that redemption and change are possible even for those entrenched in a flawed system. The use of pirate witches is a fresh twist on traditional pirate tales, combining magic with maritime adventure in a way that feels both original and engaging. The camaraderie among Alys's group highlights themes of loyalty and resilience, essential for anyone fascinated by stories of resistance and empowerment. What I appreciated from a reader's perspective was how the book doesn’t just provide escapism but invites reflection on control, freedom, and the power dynamics that shape our worlds—even if it’s through the lens of fantasy. The promising cliffhanger ending made me eager to grab the second book and continue following their journey. Overall, for those who enjoy fantasy novels with strong, complex female leads and layered plots involving political intrigue and magical elements, 'The Sea Witch' is an exceptional pick. It's not just a book about pirates or witches—it's a story about fighting back against tyranny and reclaiming power in a world that tries to suppress it.
