... Read moreMaking your own flaxseed gel for hair is a game-changer, and I'm so excited to share more of my personal tips beyond the basic recipe! It's one of my favorite DIYs for healthy hair. Getting the Perfect Boil & Consistency: My secret to perfect flaxseed gel? It's all in the boil! While the original recipe gives you a great starting point, I've found that keeping a close eye on the consistency is key. I usually bring 17oz of water to a rolling boil in a non-stick pan, then add my 33g of flaxseeds, plus a few cloves and a sprig of rosemary. Once it's all in, I reduce the heat to low-medium. The magic really happens between 5-7 minutes for me. You'll notice the water starts to thicken, almost like egg whites, forming a gel-like consistency. Stir constantly to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking. Don't over-boil, or it will become too thick and hard to strain. And remember, it thickens a bit more as it cools! Immediately straining it through a fine-mesh sieve or nylon stocking is crucial while it's still warm to avoid a gloopy mess. Unlocking Hair Growth with Flaxseed Gel: For hair growth, I swear by flaxseed gel! I've been using it as a pre-poo treatment once a week. Before shampooing, I section my hair and generously apply the gel directly to my scalp, massaging it in gently to stimulate blood flow. I then work it through the lengths of my hair. The natural omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseeds are fantastic for nourishing hair follicles, which can lead to stronger, healthier hair and reduced breakage. Some people even notice new 'SPROUTS' of hair growth! I leave it on for about 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes even longer under a shower cap, before washing it out. The slip it provides is also amazing for detangling, which further prevents damage and encourages growth. Flaxseed Gel for Dandruff Relief: Dealing with dandruff can be frustrating, but flaxseed gel has been a game-changer for my flaky scalp! Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, I find it really soothing. I apply a small amount directly to my scalp, focusing on affected areas, and gently massage it in. I usually do this as a leave-in treatment overnight or for a few hours before washing. It helps to moisturize the scalp and calm irritation without leaving a greasy residue. I always make sure I'm using high-quality, sometimes even USDA-certified organic, flaxseeds when making my gel, as purity can make a difference for sensitive scalps. How Long to Keep it on Your Hair: The "how long" question really depends on what you're using it for! For curl definition, I apply it to damp hair and leave it in – no rinsing required! For my pre-poo hair growth treatment, I typically leave it on for 30 minutes to an hour, or sometimes even longer for a deep treatment. When I'm tackling dandruff, I might leave it on overnight. For detangling, I just apply it right before washing and rinse it out with my shampoo. Experiment to see what works best for your hair type and needs!

Oh yes! I learned the hard way letting flaxseed boil too long in water will make the gel sooo thick that it was impossible to strain. Learned lessons add to better wisdom ;)
