In simple terms, an engine stroke refers to the full travel of a piston within its cylinder, either upwards or downwards. Imagine the piston moving from its highest point (Top Dead Center or TDC) to its lowest point (Bottom Dead Center or BDC), or vice-versa. Each of these movements is considered a 'stroke,' and they're crucial steps in the engine's cycle, where the magic of converting fuel into motion happens. Most internal combustion engines, like those in our cars or even many lawnmowers, operate on a cycle of these strokes. The two most common types you'll encounter are the 4-stroke engine and the 2-stroke engine. Understanding the difference boils down to how many piston strokes it takes to complete one full power cycle – that's when the engine actually generates usable power. Let's break down the 4-stroke engine first, as it's the most prevalent in modern vehicles. As the name suggests, it needs four distinct strokes of the piston to generate power: Intake Stroke: The piston moves down, creating a vacuum that pulls a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinder through an open intake valve.
