Giving my living room a refresh…
Hanging curtains higher and wider than the window frame, gives the illusion of more space and makes the room feel larger.
When refreshing a living room, one of the easiest yet most impactful updates is changing how you hang your curtains. From my own experience, lifting the curtain rod so that curtains hang well above the window frame dramatically transforms the room's feel. This technique tricks the eye into perceiving higher ceilings, making the space seem larger and more open. I also extend the curtains beyond the window’s width by several inches on either side. Doing so enlarges the perceived size of the window and allows more natural light to flood in when the curtains are open. This naturally brightens and energizes the living room. I prefer light, natural fabrics like linen or cotton blends because they soften the overall appearance, adding warmth without overwhelming the décor. Letting the curtains fall all the way to the floor adds elegance and lengthens the wall visually. These simple curtain adjustments—hanging them higher and wider, opting for airy fabrics, and ensuring full-length draping—are affordable DIY hacks to refresh your living room's look without major renovations. It’s amazing how these small changes create a room that feels like it has more breathing space, a calming retreat perfect for midlife simplicity and spring renewal.
