things i do to help my depression

these are the things that help me manage my depression and improve my quality of life, but i know everyone’s journey is different.

an example from my list is last year i had to cut off a couple friends who constantly needed too much energy and responsiveness from me. if i didn’t message back within a few minutes they would get very upset. they said i seemed fine and was using mental health as an excuse to ignore them. i saw myself trying to keep up too much and slowly almost fall into a bad depressive episode but thankfully i had a support system that helped me see what changes i needed to make and how i could improve my mental by just realizing certain bonds were not meant for me. #positiveenergy #lemon8challenge #fightingdepression #depressionsupport #mentalhealing

... Read moreWe all see those 'depressed memes' online, right? Sometimes they hit a little too close to home, offering a moment of 'hey, someone gets it!' But while a good meme can offer a fleeting laugh or a nod of shared experience, truly battling depression often means moving beyond just relating to the struggle and actively implementing strategies that work for *you*. I’ve been on this journey, and I’ve found that what really helps isn't just scrolling through relatable content, but actively applying what I've learned to manage those tough days. My last documented episode of a mild recurrent major depressive disorder was almost a year ago, and here's what I've found makes a real difference: #1 Feel Your Feelings & #2 Avoid Forced Positivity: It sounds simple, but so often we're taught to just 'snap out of it' or suppress emotions. I've learned that truly feeling what's going on, whether it's sadness, anger, or frustration, is the first step. For me, this isn't about wallowing, but acknowledging. Sometimes I'll just sit with it, maybe even journal (though I'm not always consistent with that!), or just let myself cry without judgment. It's like gently giving myself permission to be human. This goes hand-in-hand with avoiding forced positivity. The pressure to always be 'fine' or 'happy' can be exhausting. I've realized that genuine healing isn't about pretending everything's okay when it's not. It's about finding authentic moments of joy, even small ones, rather than forcing a smile when you're hurting. Sometimes, just having 'brunch & yap' with a friend is enough genuine connection to lift my spirits far more than any forced 'good vibes only' attitude. #3 Have a Support System & #4 Set Boundaries with Friends: My original post touched on this, and it's HUGE. I had to learn that not all friendships are healthy for my mental health. Setting boundaries, even with people you care about, is an act of self-love. It protects your energy. I've found that a true support system isn't just people who offer advice, but those who listen without judgment and understand when you need space. Leaning on others and asking for help isn't weakness; it's smart. #5 Engage in Small, Manageable Tasks & #6 Celebrate Small Wins: When depression hits, even getting out of bed can feel monumental. This strategy has been a lifesaver. I break down everything into tiny steps. 'Shower' becomes 'walk to bathroom,' then 'turn on water,' then 'step in.' And when I achieve even the smallest thing, like getting dressed or making my coffee (perhaps an iced coffee!), I acknowledge it. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about accumulating tiny victories that build momentum. These small wins contributed significantly to my progress. #7 Practice Self-Compassion & #8 Find Things You Enjoy Doing: This is where I learned to give myself the same kindness I’d offer a struggling friend. Instead of beating myself up for not being 'productive' or 'happy,' I remind myself that I'm doing my best. It's okay to take things one step at a time. This includes allowing myself to find things I enjoy doing, even if they seem 'unproductive' to others. Whether it’s watching a silly show, going for an outdoor walk wearing my green cap and denim jacket, or just petting a wet dog, these moments of joy are crucial. When you're depressed, you often lose interest in everything. Actively seeking out hobbies or activities that used to bring joy, even if you don't feel like it at first, can re-spark something. It’s about remembering what makes you feel alive. Remember, you've got this!
