Ep5: Dad can't accept using online AI
Sharing my experience introducing AI tools to family members, especially older ones, can be quite the challenge. In this episode, Dad's reaction to my AI avatar was priceless—he stared for ten seconds and immediately asked, "Where's the GPU?" implying that without visible hardware, it felt like cheating. This highlights how some people still associate computing power with physical devices instead of cloud-based solutions. From my perspective, using online AI platforms can be incredibly convenient and powerful without needing high-end personal hardware. However, explaining this can be difficult when someone is used to traditional technology concepts. I found that patiently demonstrating the AI's capabilities, combined with analogies about renting computing power online, helped bridge the understanding gap. For those facing similar encounters, I suggest starting by showing practical uses of AI that feel relatable, like generating art or simplifying tasks, to showcase benefits beyond technical details. It's also valuable to acknowledge concerns about authenticity and fairness, addressing misconceptions about "cheating" or computer dependency. Incorporating family stories and reactions like these enriches discussions around emerging AI technology, helping everyone appreciate how AI can integrate into daily life, regardless of age or tech familiarity. This human angle adds depth to the AI conversation, making it more approachable for different generations.
