Honest Review: Poppi Probiotic Soda
Not gonna lie; I’m not a soda drinker. The only carbonated thing I’ve stomached in over a decade is Alani, and even that’s a recent win. That said, I used to be a major cola drinker back in my teen/early adult years. So when I saw Poppi on sale (after seeing it all over the place lately), I figured: why not give it a try?
First Impressions:
Poppi’s Classic Cola is very clearly aiming to be a healthy dupe for Coke Classic which, coincidentally, was my go-to soda way back when.
Right out of the can, a few things stood out:
The carbonation is super light; no satisfyingly aggressive fizz here
The flavor is sweet, with a softer, less sharp cola profile
Weirdly… it sent me straight back to sipping a fountain Coke from an ice-filled glass at a restaurant as a kid
That’s both good and bad.
It honestly tastes like a semi-flat Coke that’s been sitting too long over ice. So yeah… kind of nostalgic, but also kind of a letdown.
And listen; I do appreciate that it’s a healthier alternative with prebiotics, less sugar, and no weird additives. But (hot take) it’s 2025 — shouldn’t we be past the point of needing the “but it’s better for you” excuse to justify something that’s just meh?
Final Thoughts:
If you’re a current soda drinker, especially if you’re into diet colas, you might actually like this!
As for me? It’s “fine.” I wouldn’t grimace if I saw someone drinking it, but I’d politely decline one in the future.
Glad I tried it. Glad I don’t feel like I’m missing out. Moving on with my fizzy-free life ✌️
So, you've seen Poppi pop up everywhere – from TikTok to the shelves at Walmart and Costco – and you're probably wondering, 'Is this prebiotic soda really worth the hype, or is it just another trendy drink?' I've been there, sipping my Classic Cola and pondering the big picture, and I wanted to dive a little deeper beyond just the initial taste test. Let's talk about the 'health benefits' everyone raves about. Poppi markets itself on being a 'prebiotic soda' that's good for your gut. But what does that actually mean? Unlike probiotics, which are live bacteria, prebiotics are essentially food for the good bacteria already living in your gut. Poppi primarily uses apple cider vinegar (ACV) as its prebiotic source, along with other natural flavors. ACV has been linked to various health claims, like aiding digestion and helping manage blood sugar. So, while it's not a magic bullet, incorporating prebiotics can definitely be a positive step for your gut microbiome. When you see claims like "5g Sugar" and "no BS (Bad Stuff)" on the can, it’s a clear nod to being a cleaner alternative compared to traditional sodas that are loaded with high fructose corn syrup and artificial ingredients. For someone trying to cut down on excessive sugar, Poppi offers a much-appreciated middle ground. Many also ask if Poppi is a 'zero calorie' option or if it's good 'for kids.' It's important to clarify that Poppi isn't zero-calorie; most flavors hover around 15-25 calories per can, which is still incredibly low compared to a standard soda (often 150+ calories). So, while not 'zero,' it's certainly a 'low-calorie' choice. As for kids, while it contains less sugar and no artificial sweeteners compared to typical fizzy drinks, it's still a flavored beverage. Personally, I'd say it's a much better alternative than a sugary juice box or regular soda for an occasional treat, but water is always king. The absence of 'weird additives' is definitely a plus for parents conscious about what their children consume. And what about that carbonation? My Classic Cola review noted the light fizz. If you're someone who craves that intense, aggressive soda pop, Poppi might feel a little subtle. However, this lighter carbonation can actually be a plus for people who find heavily carbonated drinks uncomfortable or bloating. It makes it a smoother, gentler drink. If the Classic Cola flavor didn't quite hit the mark for you, don't write off Poppi entirely! They have a fantastic range of other flavors like Watermelon, Raspberry Rose, and Ginger Lime, which often get higher praise for their unique and refreshing profiles. Sometimes it's just about finding your perfect match. Finally, let's talk practicality. Finding Poppi is usually pretty easy these days; I've spotted it in major retailers like Walmart, Target, and sometimes even in bulk at Costco. While it's generally more expensive than a can of regular soda, you're paying for the added health benefits and cleaner ingredients. Is it for everyone? Maybe not. But if you're like me – a former soda drinker looking for a healthier, flavorful alternative that supports gut health without all the 'bad stuff' – then Poppi is definitely worth exploring. It's a refreshing step towards a more mindful way of enjoying a fizzy drink, even if my first sip of Classic Cola was a nostalgic 'meh' moment.
