Gotland fleece and sheep!

I got a few bags full of gotland fiber from a local sheep owner and when I got there to pick up the wool she asked me if I wanted to meet the sheep! obviously!

I got fleece from 3 different sheep. The 2 you see in the photos and then a lovely lambs fleece from the daughter of the lighter colored sheep.

My spinning wheel spins a little too fast for this long of a fiber so I have been spinning it on spindles for the time being. My long term goal is to weave a lot of fabric with the spun yarn and make a full length wool skirt. I'm thinking plaid maybe with darker and lighter but I'm not sure yet. Maybe make a matching cardigan as well I think that would be so cute.

... Read moreEver wondered what makes Gotland sheep fleece so special? Since bringing home these incredible fibers from those charming black-faced Gotland sheep, I've been completely immersed in learning all about their unique wool, and I just had to share what I've discovered! First off, the texture of Gotland fleece is truly something else. It's known for its beautiful luster, which gives your finished projects a lovely sheen. The fibers are typically long, and as you saw in the photos, they often have that gorgeous curly grey fleece. This natural color variation, from light to dark grey, is one of its most appealing characteristics, meaning you don't always need to dye it to get stunning results. It’s also incredibly soft for a longwool, making it perfect for next-to-skin wear once processed. My personal journey with this Gotland sheep fleece started with a bit of a challenge! As I mentioned in my main post, my usual spinning wheel was a little too fast for these long staples. This is a common characteristic of Gotland fiber, which often has a staple length of 4-8 inches. So, I switched to my trusty spindles, which have been fantastic for getting a feel for the fiber and creating a beautifully consistent yarn. If you're a spinner, you'll know that long fibers can sometimes be a bit tricky, but the results are so worth it. The strength and drape you get from Gotland wool are unparalleled. When you're working with raw Gotland fleece, cleaning is key. I found that a gentle wash in warm water with a wool-specific soap helped retain that amazing luster. You want to avoid too much agitation to prevent felting prematurely. Laying it flat to dry helps keep the integrity of those lovely locks. Once clean, flick carding or even just hand-picking works wonderfully to prepare it for spinning or felting. Beyond spinning, Gotland fleece is versatile. It's fantastic for felting, both wet and needle felting, thanks to its crimp and strength. Imagine creating a cozy felted rug or even some sturdy felted slippers from this incredible fiber! For weavers like me, the resulting yarn from Gotland sheep fleece creates a durable fabric with excellent drape, perfect for garments like the skirt and cardigan I'm dreaming of. Its resistance to pilling is another huge bonus. If you're looking to try working with Gotland fleece yourself, I highly recommend finding a local breeder or a reputable fiber supplier. Getting to meet the sheep, like I did, really adds to the experience and connects you more deeply with your craft. This "curly grey fleece" isn't just fiber; it's a piece of art waiting to be transformed. I'm so excited to see what other projects I'll create with it, and I encourage you to explore the wonders of Gotland wool too!
