I've always loved tres leches cake, but sometimes the thought of baking from scratch can be a little intimidating. That's why I was so excited when I stumbled upon this incredible Oreo Tres Leches cake recipe that uses a box cake mix! It's truly a game-changer for anyone who wants a decadent dessert without all the fuss. This 'easy to make' method means you can have a show-stopping cake with minimal effort. One of the biggest secrets to a perfectly moist tres leches is getting that milk mixture absorbed just right. After your cake comes out of the oven and cools, don't be shy about poking plenty of holes with a fork – I usually go for about 15-20 pokes per square inch. This helps the three milks (sweet condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk) really soak into every crumb, creating that signature melt-in-your-mouth texture. Some people even like to warm their milk mixture slightly before pouring; I've found it can help the cake absorb it even better, especially if your kitchen is a bit cool. Now, let's talk about the Oreos – they're the star here! While the recipe mentions removing the crème, I sometimes leave a little bit in when crushing the cookies for an extra layer of sweetness and flavor in the cake batter. When you mix the crushed Oreo cookies into the vanilla cake mix batter, make sure they're evenly distributed so every bite of your Oreo Tres Leches cake has that delightful crunch and chocolatey goodness. For crushing, a food processor works wonders for fine crumbs, but a zip-top bag and a rolling pin are perfectly fine too, giving you a slightly chunkier texture which I personally love! After pouring all that milky goodness over your cake in the baking pan, the hardest part is waiting! The original recipe says to let it set for the day, and I can't stress enough how important that chill time is. Letting it sit in the fridge for at least 8 hours, or even overnight, allows the cake to fully absorb the milks and for the flavors to meld beautifully. This patience is rewarded with an unbelievably moist, flavorful, and cohesive cake that truly embodies the 'cookies and cream' dream. Finally, for the finishing touches! When it comes to topping your Oreo Tres Leches cake, the Cool Whip creates a lovely, light 'white cream' contrast to the rich cake. I like to spread it generously and then go wild with more crushed Oreo cookies on top for both presentation and an added textural element. For an extra special touch, you could even drizzle a little chocolate syrup or add whole mini Oreos around the edge. This simple 'easy to make' dessert is always a crowd-pleaser and proof that you don't need to be a pastry chef to create something truly spectacular!
