Day 2 learning chainmail

Didn't make much progress on day 2. I struggled to connect the 2 rows for a while then gave up and started making new rows to practice a different way. I feel like pinning helps but finding the right angles is hard.

... Read moreHey everyone! I totally get the struggles that come with learning chainmail, like CrowShae mentioned in their post. Trying to get those tiny metal chainmail rings to connect just right, especially when you're forming new rows, can be super frustrating! I’ve had my fair share of messed-up connections and dropped rings too. It really emphasizes the importance of patience and practice in any craft, doesn't it? But what if I told you there's another super cool and often more accessible way to dive into the world of chainmail? I've been exploring soda tab chainmail lately, and it’s been such a fun and rewarding experience! It's a fantastic alternative if you're looking for a project that's a bit easier on the wallet and lets you upcycle something everyday into art. Plus, it's a great way to hone those practicing chainmail assembly skills without the initial investment in specialized metal rings. Making can tab chainmail is surprisingly straightforward once you get the hang of it. First off, you'll need a lot of soda tabs! Start collecting from your drinks, ask friends and family, or even check with local recycling centers. You'd be surprised how many soda tabs to make chainmail for even a small project like a bracelet – it adds up quickly! Make sure they're clean and dry before you start. Next, you'll need some basic tools, usually just a pair of needle-nose pliers. Some crafters even use small metal rods or dowels as mandrels to help bend the tabs or keep rows aligned, much like how a wooden pegboard might be used for traditional chainmail to organize pieces. The main technique involves bending the tabs and then interlocking them. You typically bend one side of a tab up and the other side down, then slide another tab through. The goal is to create a secure, flexible weave, just like with metal rings. My biggest tip for connecting soda tab chainmail is similar to what CrowShae mentioned about pinning: finding the right angle is key! When you're bending the tabs, uniformity makes a huge difference in the final look and how easily they interlock. Don't be afraid to experiment with different plier techniques to get that perfect bend. Just like with traditional chainmail, starting new rows can be tricky, but patience pays off. There are tons of tutorials online for different weaves, from simple sheets to more complex patterns for things like bags or even clothing. It's amazing what you can create from something destined for the trash. I’ve seen incredible chainmail out of soda tabs including purses, belts, and even dresses! It’s not just a craft; it’s a statement about sustainability and creativity. So, if you're feeling a bit stuck on your traditional chainmail journey, or just want to try something new, give chain mail soda tabs a go. It might just be the creative refresh you need, and you'll be building those essential chainmail skills along the way!
