Just landed a new UX role with a 25% salary bump

Y’all, after 4 months of soul-crushing job hunts, I finally jumped ship!

Biggest lessons:

1. Portfolios aren’t show and tell – they don’t care about your dribbble-worthy buttons. Focus on your decisions: “Why did you fight for that user flow? How did it boost metrics?”

2. Brand yourself – My tagline: “Bridge builder between chaos and clarity.” Colors/fonts matched my vibe.

3. BQ hacks – Stuck? Say: “Let me reframe that…” or pivot to a similar story.

What’s your secret weapon in portfolios/interviews? And how do you handle “Tell me a time you failed” without spiraling?

... Read moreNavigating the job market can be daunting, especially in the competitive UX field. In today's landscape, effective portfolio presentation is crucial. Instead of merely showcasing design work, focus on articulating the decisions behind your designs and their impact on user experience and metrics. Highlight specific examples where your design choices led to measurable improvements. Branding as a UX professional is essential. A personal tagline that reflects your design philosophy, such as ‘Bridge builder between chaos and clarity,’ can set you apart. Use visuals that resonate with your brand identity, ensuring consistency across platforms. Interview preparation is another key area to refine. Practicing responses to common questions, especially handling setbacks, can bolster your confidence. Instead of viewing failures negatively, frame them as learning experiences. For example, practice thinking of a challenging situation and how you navigated it, which showcases your resilience and problem-solving skills. Remember to tailor your portfolio and branding to the specific role you're applying for, highlighting relevant skills and experiences. Utilize networking opportunities, like industry meetups or forums, to connect with professionals and gain insights that can further enhance your approach. With perseverance and strategic branding, you too can successfully land your desired UX role.
